I need to get a drainage inspection chamber fitted in my front garden which unfortunately entails rerouting my incoming mains gas pipe.
Does anyone have any experience of this? Is it something an appropriate gas-safe contractor can do or do I need to speak to British Gas?
I'd be grateful for any insights or advice.
Thanks,
Adam

Anything from the meter outwards would have to involve Cadent (the main supply contractor) and it will not be cheap. My assumption is that the drainage and gas duct/pipe are running too close or one above to build a small inspection box?. As the garden appears to have been tiled, was there one originally which has since been hidden?.
Hi Martin,
You're correct in your assumption. There may have been one once but not in my tenure and not underneath the tiles. A lof of houses on the ladder were built without them apparently.
When you say "not cheap" - what do you mean?
Thanks,
Adam
Actually Cadent have a handy price calculator

The TLDR; of which is :
£787 service fee then £158 / £45 per metre of pipe move dependent on whether they dig the hole or your contractor does. In addition, if you require the movement of the gas metre that's an additional £340. All plus VAT
So expensive but not eye-watering.
A few years back, while investigating a leak of gas in the street outside my house, the investigator opined that the source of the leak must be the joint between the steel pipe which carried gas into my basement and the low pressure main under the public footway (which he said was modern plastic). A Cadent team then installed a nice new yellow plastic pipe into my basement at no expense to me. Because the water company had recently cut a new trench through my paved front yard, I insisted that Cadent put their new pipe in the same trench. This they did and made good the surface. You could say that the supply pipe was rerouted. In fact the old steel pipe was left in situ. It turned out that they were quite wrong about the source of the leak. Moreover, their records showing that the gas main was plastic were also wrong. That section gas main was in fact replaced a year or two later.
Thank Dick - hopefully I'll be able to keep the exploratory work to a minimum
