Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hello, I'm looking for people who might be interested in joining a WhatsApp group about gardening. I find this website quite clunky and tricky to use on my phone so I'm reluctant to try to use this forum.

It could be a place to ask questions, share tools, swap seeds, lend an extra pair of hands for tricky jobs, sharing cuttings. Etc. Just seeing if there's any appetite here as the group seems to have been quiet for a while but there nay be some interested people here..

I'm on the Harringay Ladder and there's some interest on my street WhatsApp group.

If there is one already set up, let me know, otherwise happy to create one.

Hi Sophie - as a keen gardener and allotmenteer I'd be happy to see such a group exist so I would definitely join it. 🌷 🌻🌼

Ok great, will message you when it's set up :)

Hi Sophie,

What a great idea, I’d be keen to join,

Many thanks

Hello - I am also a keen gardener. May I join?

Alison did start a gardening group on this site some years back and it did some great things like setting up, I think a couple of, Harringay Open Gardens events and plant give-aways. It was useful and I've still got some great plants in my garden from it. However, as you say, Sophie, HoL doesn't always lend itself to causal quick-fire everyday interactions, particularly now that now we're all so used to the convenience of WhatsApp et al. So, I'm happy to join your group.

May I make one suggestion. When I first set up this site, there was little sense of Harringayness. I was keen to do something to heal that. So I explicitly targeted its focus on the whole of Harringay, that is to say, the Ladder, Hermitage, the Gardens and Woodlands. May I suggest that you make the same explicit focus for the group you're setting up?

BTW, both Alison's group and yours share the heritage of the Beautiful Harringay Society (links below to posts of mine on this site about the Society).

Hi Hugh

When you say the whole of Harringey do you mean the whole of Haringey or just the areas you mention?

A quick thank you to Alison for all the hard work she did.

I mean Harringay not Haringey - but that's as a focus of interest. HoL has always welcomed people from further afield as members but the focus of interest is Harringay. Alison's gardening group had some members from other parts of the borough including from Bowes Park from where I got, and still have, a lovely perennial cornflower that has been doing me proud every year.

Here's the group's description on WhatsApp:

I take it from this that Sophie has set it up with a Ladder focus but has the group open to all Haringey locals (I assume she means Haringey rather than Harringay).

Thank you Hugh, I've spent 60 years in this Borough (N8, N4 and N15) and never realised Harringay was different to Haringey. I just thought it was a different spelling. Not a different place. That's really helped, thank you.

Hey, thanks for the history. Alison is on my street and is in the group and talked about the previous events which is nice to hear.

Just for context, I originally wanted to make the the group so as not to spam our existing street group with lots of gardening questions. I wanted to check I wasn't duplicating anything that was currently being used, and to gauge interest here, but this should still be a platform for that too. And selfishly, I'm a renter with no car. This group was just a local thing to be able to borrow from neighbors easily and I come here when I need to go further afield.

The group might reference the ladder but of course happy for anyone here to join, and have amended the word Haringey to Harringay. Hopefully that's clearer. Do pass on to anyone you want to invite.
