Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Further to our report on the City North development back in 2008, the plans have now been given planning approval by Islington Council.

City North will include shops and offices and will tower 106 metres above Finsbury Park station. It is the largest regeneration scheme in Islington since Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.

It is the brainchild of Jack Morris, multi-millionaire chairman of the Business Design Centre, and was approved by Islington council last week.

Mr Morris told a planning committee: "The planning brief was to produce a landmark transformational scheme that would kick-start the regeneration of Finsbury Park."

The rates are shown on the Unite website. Currently, students pay £7,905 for 51 weeks "ensuite"; or £10,455 for 51 weeks for a "studio". But that includes:
"3/4 size beds, a private courtyard, quiet study area and common room. There's also an onsite laundry and bike storage. In-room Internet access, contents insurance and all your utility bills are included in the price."
Also: "The property boasts great views from some rooms."

As Nico Hogg points out Unite charge more for other London locations.
Yes I looked up the rents too. Compared to their central London colleagues, they will have to add £1000 pa for a travelcard, or maybe try getting the bus into town for £400pa plus five hours a day on the 259.

O brave new world.

As one of the spoilt generation who was paid to go to university (the first time) and so did not have a £30k debt by the age of 21, I am always a bit staggered by these figures.
There's a bit more detail in the Architects Journal . Twenty-two stories.

[That link worked for me when I went to it from a google search - maybe you only get one click a day.]
I'm all in favour of the "regeneration of Finsbury Park" and don't object to high rises per se but this looks like a complete eye-sore to me!
I agree. The business proposing this development brought us the Business Design Centre in the heart of Islington, a really appalling building, ugly and strangely sited back from Upper St, with all that land wasted in front of it, so people can be driven to the door or park beneath! So I don't hold out hope for the Finsbury Park proposal. Nothing wrong with towers. Give us the 'Gerkin' any day! Something stylish.
The Business Design Centre is the old Royal Agricultural Hall which was rescued from demolition by it new owners. It's a highly successful conversion of an 1861 building that was originally used for exhibiting livestock.

There's lots of clever ideas in this development that could be adapted to a much larger building in our Borough on top of Muswell Hill. The sympathetic revamp of this big hall by the present owners is a credit to them.

I don't recognize the Grade II hall as a "really appalling building". Some history here.
Anne, I don't think folk are bashing Haringey over this. I said in my post that it's Islington

Did you know the site you linked to is a Daily Mail site? See our original post, we have more pics/models there.
"Did you know the site you linked to is a Daily Mail site"

Sorry, what's the relevance of this? The page at least gives people the opportunity to register their disgust!
I just mention it in passing Paulie/Anne. There's no agenda or implication; just a bald statement of fact with the idea that people might be interested to know that the Daily Mail are getting involved in local websites.
First reaction Hugh: April Fool's joke, just a bit late.
Second reaction: shock
Then: cold fury.

The view from Finsbury Park (near the cafe) down over the fields towards the Emirates and Islington, one of the finest views in north London imho, is about to be wrecked by a hideous monstrosity erected purely to enrich developers and those with whom they collude and once again no meaningful consultation has taken place.

I thought Islington - which leaves roads in ruins while repeatedly refurbishing the "plaza" in the front of the Town Hall, proclaims safety for cyclists while installing humps to break our wheels (and ignores correspondence on the subject) and repeatedly feathers its own bed - could not debase itself further. I was wrong. Regeneration? My backside. This is about getting rich. One of the few highlights - perhaps the only one - of living in south-eastern Haringey is the park and the walk over the hill towards the Emirates.

Fortunately there is one more chance. Unfortunately it comes in the shape of Boris Johnson.

Never mind. The fight has to start - and end - somewhere.

If anyone else is serious about trying to block this plan, please reply or even better send me a message.

Paulie
Is there a hope in hell these things can be stopped??? apart from what they will look like when finished and the ruined view from the park, just think of all the traffic disruption whilst being constructed. And does this mean the refurbishment of Finsbury park station which took years and loadsadosh is negated cus its all going to be knocked down anyway??

I am supportive of regeneration but not worthless eyesores which wont fit, wont work and wont do the job
Ruth/Paulie
I'm with you. If they want to improve the area around Finsbury Park that's fine but not like this! This looks like a monstrosity and it would ruin the view from the park. There are plenty of examples of beautiful modern buildings in central London so why can't they look at those for inspiration - not the business design centre though!!!
