Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I recently visited Enfield and saw the Culture Palace. Its an initiative using disused shops. Its used for community events as well as an independent bookshop and cafe. I attended a baby sing a long class there. They host jazz and other concerts in the evening.

And it got me thinking, wouldn't it be lovely to have something similar nearby. I'd love somewhere with more space for baby classes.

But also, wouldn't it be lovely if Green Lanes had -

  • A vets
  • Baby soft play
  • Knitting / craft shop
  • What else do we need?

Great idea! I think they call this “meanwhile use” and sometimes there is a dedicated officer at the council looking for potential sites etc. might be worth contacting the regeneration team at haringey to see? I would like a local workspace that might be a change from working from home

It's not Green Lanes, but has anyone tried Clockwise, the work space in Wood Green?

I was in Westcliff on Sea yesterday and a double fronted shop that had been empty for a number of years had been turned into a community hub by Age Concern.  Although many of the activities were aimed at older people there were also activities and classes open to everyone and some provision for younger people.

Snug cafe has a small bit of softplay :)

Nice idea. I’d love to see a second hand bookshop/cafe and community fridge.

There is also a growing movement towards having community assets which are lent, rather than everyone buying their own kit which they only use once a year. For example, jet wash, DIY stuff etc. This might be possible if a community space had some storage space.

Also https://www.libraryofthings.co.uk/ - the most local locations are Finsbury Park and Hackney. I've not used them as yet, but have been keeping an eye for when I need a thing! I have hired tools from Jewsons on Wightman Road though - conveniently local.

Love that. Thanks!

Thanks Matt, it’s difficult isn’t is - hire twice and pay more than buying one - better for the environment but worse on the pocket. I think the community idea is that you can rent or loan them out at much lower cost. Luckily I have a kind neighbour who lent me one, but not everyone is in that position!

A bike shop

The All Good Bookshop on Turnpike Lane are keen to run events for the community and already do a fair few. If you were looking for a venue. Beans and Barley has quite a big soft play bit attached. Also , I was walking through Lordship Rec the other day and was pleased and surprised to see a community bike shop which does repairs and sells secondhand. Rockstone Workshop. It is just at Lordship Lane entrance. I know it’s not Green Lanes but quite near.

another vote for a local bike shop. I've always thought that the Michlis' premises on St Ann's Road would be ideal for a community bike/misc place, but only if they were no longer in residence.
