It's a shame to see, yet again, the area portrayed as the playground of the Turkish gangs. This is no doubt still a factor in the lives of many local people of Turkish origin but how about some focus on the good news stories, the young people breaking away and forging careers in the law, policing, armed forces, medicine and business. The area needs a better narrative.

Herb

But that’s not what she wanted to write about

Which is a shame given the wealth of other material, experiences and characters available.

The author grew up here so I would imagine she is drawing on her own experiences

Please tell me what other novels there are about Turkish gangs in Haringey. I'd like to read them.

Havent read it yet - waiting for it to be available in paperback! but I imagine Elif Shafak's Island of Missing Trees will give a better flavour?

Thanks, I have pre ordered it!

Think Shafak will be excellent - have you met the MH Baylis 3 books set in Haringey/The 3rd one - Black day at the Bosphorous Cafe is Green Lanes! (crime fiction)

He didn't follow the world news much these days. The world, in any case, always came to Haringey. When Mina, a Kurdish student activist, plunges in flames from the top floor of Wood Green Shopping City, it's widely assumed to be a political protest. But local reporter Rex Tracey, who knew the dead girl, doesn't buy it. His suspicions mount when a council whistleblower meets a similarly ugly end. As he investigates, the sleuthing journalist with the chequered past and the penchant for Polish lager is sucked into a world of honour killings, corrupt officials, and clashing traditions.

Yes I've read them all, wish he'd write more!

oh good! So do I!

Never heard of this series - thanks for the tip.

It’s sounds like a good book. Life for a young girl growing up with all the problems in her family. If you read the review it’s about far more than Turkish gangs.

Elif Shafak’s book The Island of Missing Trees is fantastic but also not an easy read it contains quite a lot of the history of Cyprus which will be familiar to many. We have to know history to understand the future. I loved it.
