For the last few weeks there has been an awful smell of sewage on green lanes…at the bottom of Seymour towards Hewitt road, outside Snug cafe. Today I saw actual sewage piled up on the street presumably coming from a back up sewer and may be related to the rain last night. I have tried reporting to Thames water but can’t get through to them. Is this is the responsibility of TW or the council…and any other ideas on what to do about it? Surely it’s a public health and hygiene issue not to mention very unpleasant!

I saw them at work yesterday morning as I passed by on the bus. Anyone passing by the spot notice if it’s less fragrant?
Sorry, just saw Alison’s post above. Seemingly not. Raw sewerage on the highway (and outside of food premises) is surely a public health emergency?
It was still flowing about an hour ago. It was out the front of the hairdressers opposite the Salisbury. It looks like it is flowing up from under the paving slabs rather than a drain. That suggests a broken pipe somewhere under the footpath.
I saw a couple of men in high vis jackets yesterday (Monday) and assume/hope that they were from Thames Water.
As Michael says earlier, you’d have thought raw sewage fell clearly into the emergency category but the responses I’ve had via TW’s social media team are that they can’t enforce anything themselves but “are able to get outside help in the case of emergencies”. I have no idea what is contributing to the delay here - surely in everyone’s interests to get this fixed as soon as possible? Perhaps an absent landlord?
I experience a similar scenario in Turnpike Lane a few years ago. Tried reporting to Thames and Harringay. Neither wanted to take responsibility. There needs to be someone at the top of the chain of command to ensure the sewerage situation is fully resolved. In respect of Turnpike Lane, I watched the Thames van arrive, look and drive away. Nothing more was done. I wrote about it at the time on here. It is my belief that residents in the Borough are poorly served and treated like they are undeserving of a quality service. It would be actioned and resolved in the leafy glades of The Shires.
I walked past a few days ago and it appears it has been sorted. I saw a "Lanes and Drains" van nearby so I assume this was dealt with privately...but thankfully its been done! Fingers crossed it doesnt happen again.
I reported this problem as urgently needing attention on 11th August ( email) , I rang them the next day emphasising the urgency due to nearby restaurant etc… and was told by a very uninterested lady from the council that it was a problem for Thames Water, she actually asked me if I had read a W on the lid but I told her that I was not prepared to put my nose in a pile of sewage waste. I emailed Thames water again as an needing urgent attention. I believe that a lot of Hewitt resident did same. It seems to be sorted , for now!) but there is still an overflow pipe trickling water at various speed from a flat directly by the sewage problem, it is a landlord problem but not sure who is the landlord; so the area is still a mess but not smelly any more
