Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I don’t know what the deadline is for the candidates for the local elections are but anyone with any concrete information on who will be standing for each party and ward could you post it here.

I have contacted the local parties and elections office at the council and will post any information they pass on.

It seems from the councils archives that we have only had a choice of four or five parties in the last local election in 2006; Labour, Lib-Dems, Conservatives, Respect and Greens unlike other elections when there has been a larger presence from fringe and smaller parties.

2010 Candidates (to be updated as information arrives)

Harringay:
Labour: Gina Adamou / Jonathan Vellapah / Nora Mulready
Lib-Dem: Karen Alexander / David Schmitz / Chris Ford
Conservative: Tim Caines /
Green:
Respect (?):

St Anns:
Labour: Zena Brabazon / David Browne / Nilgun Canver
Lib-Dem:
Conservative: Phevious Joannides / Micheal Olajide /
Green:
Respect:

Seven Sisters:
Labour: Dhiren Basu / Joe Goldberg / Claire Kober
Lib-Dem:
Conservative: Justin Hichcliffe / Mahir Gul / Isaac Revah

No, John, I don't think we'll be endorsing any candidates. I can see the headlines in that old thunderer, The Crouch End & Hornsey Journal,

Soaraway HoL endorses ConLabOcrat party and seals election victory in Harringay Wards

No, that's not what I had in mind at all.

There are a number of things we can/may do. At this point the key role for HoL to play is to do our best to present locals with as clear an idea as possible of what candidates believe and what they will do for Harringay.

If you look at the Harringay results for the last local elections, you'll see that it doesn't take much to swing a seat in any of our three wards. The most marginal of the three wards is Harringay. If something like 310 people had voted differently - or voted at all - all three candidates could have been different.

The least marginal, in Labour's favour, is St Ann's. Even there, the 4th placed candidate only lost by 485 votes.

Julie, you are vice chair of the local Labour Party. What we on HoL want is to understand what the candidates from your party and the others will aim to achieve on behalf of the residents.

Anyone who asks for an endorsement will be given short shrift. We are only interested in the quality of the candidates and their intentions whilst in office. We will be offering plenty of opportunity for those who want to be open and forthright.
"I really would not like to see HoL used to endorse any political candidates. #canofworms"

Bloody hell I don't think we all know individually who we're going to vote for never mind a group of six to eight making a group decision. HOL aint the Sun John.

Is there a non of the above section/abstain box on the ballot paper?
I vote for Liz and Hugh :-)
I meant endorse i.e. support at a personal level. I certainly would be against the website endorsing political candidates. The perils of writing late at night sometimes mean lack of clarity
So, total disengagement as a solution. What do you propose in its place Alan?
Kosher politicians that don't lie, steel and that can be trusted, a political system with a wide choice of parties that is fare and representable? A system that allows differing opinions rather than the 10% in the middle that all three parties hold now. What happened to conviction political mindset, oh it's being replace by popularist, party line politics just to be elected - the electorate are disenfranchised with this arrogance.

Voting a local and national level should be about whom you feel will do the job for you not to vote for the person you hate the least, which is what people are voting for.

Local turnout is around 30% and national is around 58%. I hate going to restaurants that offer little choice, the same can be said about the political system. At least some sort of PR would give voters a proper representation on their vote; the current system means millions of votes are wasted votes.

Nationally it is geared up the keep the main two passing the batten every 4/8/12 years, which is not a choice in my book.

I know there’s a difference between national and local, but unfortunately politicians are tarred with their counterparts in other parts of the political system.

My rant for the day!
Glad you can afford to eat-out Birdy Too. But when you say I hate going to restaurants that offer little choice, is that perhaps a reflection of your views about meat?! Did you see this BBC story on the role of meat making mankind?

(I completely agree about proportional representation. Peoples' votes ought to have equal power. The absence of a fair voting system may be why there is such disinterest and disaffection with politics).

.
Very true Clive, but there are herbivore restaurants that offer little choice too, but I very much take your point.
As a 'split' ward and a marginal, for both the major local parties, Harringay Ward represents the Front Line. With respect to voters in other Wards of the Borough, it has to be recognised that with the present system, voters in Harringay Ward are unfairly advantaged.
'the LibDems requires you to register and log in even to find out basic info about 'Your local Focus Team'!

Liz, which website have you been looking at? I'm surprised to hear this and I'll take it up with the LD 'powers that be'. There's absolutely no reason that I can see why information on our local candidates and issues should not be accessible by all.

The only other thing I want to add (and potentially run the risk of earning myself a clip round the ear in the process), is that I'm not here to be another bland face of a political party. I studied politics and have always been sceptical about party allegiances. I'm working with the Lib Dems because, as a resident myself, I believe they are the best chance we have of real positive change in Harringay/Haringey. Saying that I am absolutely prepared to speak out if I disagree with a party line/initiative. I have been working with the local Lib Dems for eight months now, before then I was just another resident with plenty to grumble about.

I'm very happy to answer any questions about myself or what I want to do in Harringay openly and frankly, indeed I would welcome a good grilling! I'm not sure if I'm supposed to post contact details on here, but please get in touch with me at chris.ford@haringeylibdems.org and I promise to respond.

Chris
Hi Chris thanks for picking my point up.

it was this one. Half this site requires a log in. As I said in my original posting (on page 1 of this discussion) if I'm looking in the wrong place for info, I'm happy to be corrected.

We'd like to post links to up to date websites that allow people to find out more their prospective comments. So far no one has corrected the original links so I presumed they were the correct sites for the local parties.

btw, congratulations Chris on being the first candidate to actually tell us something about yourself and offer to talk about what you hope to do.
Liz,

Just to say that I brought up the issue of David's website and the lack of info available online about our candidates.

It would seem that we've been having some difficulties with the hosts of David's website and we may well not be able to make these sections of the website public - ludicrous as it sounds.

This is obviously a problem so i've suggested we set up a small but informative Harringay Ward website for David, Karen and Me, with a front page of news updates and information on what we've been doing locally and initiatives we're working on. Also a page with some pics and biogs, and of course contact details.

So watch this space, and as soon as it's up and running I'll blog the address.

Thanks,
Chris
