Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
2010 Local Election Candidates
I don’t know what the deadline is for the candidates for the local elections are but anyone with any concrete information on who will be standing for each party and ward could you post it here.
I have contacted the local parties and elections office at the council and will post any information they pass on.
It seems from the councils archives that we have only had a choice of four or five parties in the last local election in 2006; Labour, Lib-Dems, Conservatives, Respect and Greens unlike other elections when there has been a larger presence from fringe and smaller parties.

Sorry, you wrote to me, too and I was in meetings today and couldn't get back to you. John beat me to it.
The Labour Party in Tottenham selected all its candidates months ago but, because of the way the party operates, there really isn't a central place to publicise the names or showcase them all. The process of selection is in the hands of our Local Government Committee which spans all Haringey, and some of the western wards haven't selected yet. Who did you write to?
In St Ann's, the positive side of our selection process has been overlooked in all the storm about Haley. We selected three really good candidates. David Browne is a former BBC journalist who lives just outside the ward. We were impressed with how much work he had already done on behalf of local residents, getting dumped mattresses shifted and solving a few intractable problems. Zena Brabazon, partner Alan Stanton, lives in Tottenham Hale Ward. She was head of Early Years and Play in Haringey for many years and a former senior officer of the council. Her knowledge of how the council works (or doesn't) will be invaluable when she's elected. I know she's found it frustrating as an officer, because of political restrictions. Like Alan, she is absolutely passionate about community politics and fizzes with great ideas. Nilgun has always worked hard for St Ann's and her commitment to the ward is excellent. She's resident in Harringay.
All three are approachable, energetic, prepared to be critical of poor services and willing to speak out against proposals that residents don't want. I'm sure you'll be hearing from them and I'll ask them to introduce themselves. One thing though, I was talking to Nora about the importance of engaging with HOL folks and whilst we all want to, it's not always possible to have the time to get caught up in a long thread. I'm sure everybody who's met Nora and seen her in action on things like HMOs or Certificates of Lawfulness, knows that she's busy doing the work rather than posting about it. It can be very frustrating posting on HOL and then getting replies you haven't got time to answer. I got involved in the thread about Sheik Thompson last week because I was on a train for the best part of two days!

Many thanks Julie, it seems Labour are the only party who are pretty much there with their candidates. You don't happen to know when all candidates must register by do you?
As Hugh says finding local candidate information is pretty difficult on the web.

The process is one of nomination. Ten electors, resident in the electoral area, sign a nomination form for any candidate whether from a party or independent. Same for an MP. If you have a look round when you're next at a polling station you'll see the candidates listed and the names and addresses of the residents who nominated them. I've occasionally been asked to nominate candidates but I don't know when nominations close.
The Liberal Democrats do it differently from us. They have a big meeting and match would-be councillors to wards, I think, but my understanding is that this has happened and that candidates in St Ann's and Harringay are set to go. David Schmitz probably knows what's happening.

@Karen Chris has been mildly politicking on here without declaring on his profile that he is a member of the Lib Dems. This is naughty.
It would be nice (despite your fame) if your profile name said
'Cllr Karen Alexander (Lib Dem) Harringay'
And Chris's said 'Chris Ford (Lib Dem) Harringay'
It would also save you having to put something at the end of each post like Alan does.

John, as you know, we'll be writing to all candidates requesting that each of them adopts a particular form for their member name - best if they wait till we do that.
