Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi

We're thinking of moving to Harringay, possibly buying a place on "the Ladder" round about Hewitt Road.

How is it there? Does it feel threatening walking say from the tube up Green Lanes to the Ladder Roads at night? Will we get hastled by gangs? IS there a lot of night-time noise.

I love the daytime buzz of Green Lanes, but reading around here I'm not so sure how it would be living there and coming and going when it is dark?

Any comments/thoughts?

I often walk in the late evening from Turnpike Lane tube, across Ducketts and up Hampden to Wightman. I have never felt threatened and have never been hassled. Indeed, twice when crossing Ducketts where I had to pass a group of young black youths, one broke away, came towards me and said " It's OK man, it's cool " which I thought was very thoughtful.
I think most people feel pretty safe in Harringay, day or night. There have been incidents but they're pretty rare. I can't say I've ever heard anyone complain about being hassled by gangs. I don't think gangs are a real issue in Harringay. As for night time noise in Hewitt - none that I'm aware of. I think Hewitt hasn't suffered so much by houses being converted into multiple dwellings which is what can cause problems.
Gang issues are up the road in Noel Park area mainly where there are several. There are gangs everywhere in London anyway but as an adult you often don't notice - you're only really going to be 'hassled' if you are a teenager as most of the gang members on the streets at least are teenagers.
Hewitt is full of middle class families. I'd stay away. Last year they even had the council close the road so they could all eat lunch in the middle of the street!
LOL - me thinks John would rather be living on Hewitt!
:)
Lausanne is pretty middle-class too. They have lunch, when real people have dinner :-)
Well said John D, what's for tea duck? (north midland saying not a'la orange!)
Of course we have problems that one associates with large cities, but there is nothing out of the ordinary except for the excellent community spirit which we have here.

As you've now found HOL, you might like to look up what happened when London was covered with snow and ice. The call went up and 20 or so residents turned up and cleared the footway known as Harringay Passage which connects the centres of most of the Ladder roads with one another and which provides a principal means of access to our two excellent primary schools.

You will find yourselves very welcome
Generally pretty safe - lived on the ladder almost thirty years without a problem. Safe at night - there are always people about.

It is a bit gritty though in terms of dirt and the behaviour of some of the local people around green lanes so it depends if you can cope with that sort of thing without it irritating the heck out of you.

No problem with noise, unless you are unfortunate enough to have an inconsiderate neighbour - but that can happen anywhere. Its not a very neighbourly place and there is quite a high turnover of residents, though HOL serves well to keep people connected - however, the cross section of people on HOL isnt necessarily reflective of what the majority of the residents on the ladder are like.

No problem with gangs as far as I am aware.

Tip: Take a trip on the 29 bus between manor house and turnpike lane and see if you can cope with that everyday. ;)
If anything, it's far safer at night than a lot of other, posher parts of London precisely because there is still some night-time activity on Green Lanes and around (although regrettably, a lot lot less than 10 years ago) and Green Lanes is always busy with traffic/buses etc. The result is far more footfall through the night (together with a night-service for both the 29 and 341) which makes it safer.

Night-time noise depends entirely on your neighbours. Terraced houses are not noted for being sound-proof. Let's just say that we probably know a little more about next door's night-time activities than we'd maybe care for!
Thanks all that is very helpful.

During the day I'd probably walk to the underground. Nightime (7-8pm) do the same coming home. So there would be some walking up/down green lanes.

I think we will have a wonder around this evening.
