Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A few people have been mentioning recently that some of the discussions can be difficult to follow. Earlier in the year a second option became available. Now we have the choice of:

Threaded - as it is now, where people can reply to other people's comments at any point in the discussion. The benefit of this is that you can reply to specific points in a discussion. The downside - and it's a significant one - is that it can be difficult to follow discussions because latest replies can appear at any point in the discussion.

Flat - in flat discussions latest replies always get added to the end of a discussion. Upside - easy to follow if you only dip in occasionally. Downside - you can't reply to specific points that other have made - though you can do this by quoting what someone else has said.

If we change to flat, it would mean that all the old discussions get flattened too. This would mean that it could be quite tough to follow these old conversations because the links between replies, previously given by physical location, will be broken.

My sense is that the older conversations are probably less frequently visited and we shoudl give flat a go. We can always put thing sback as they were.

Anyone else have a view?

I think we should at least *try* flat, as we've had threaded for some time and it does take a while to get used to new ways of doing things online. Also, thinking of the most successful bulletin boards out there on the interwebs, I think it's fair to say that most of them are flat.

If people want to pick up earlier points, they can always cut and paste (or there might even be a 'quote' function that would do the trick in the new set-up).
Flat fools rush in where angels fear to thread. Keep on threading.
I prefer threaded ideally, but as others have said it doesn't always work out that way and can be confusing when you're reading a post that has had a lot of discussion. Perfectly willing to give flat a go ..
I would vote for flat. It can be difficult to follow conversations - and even find comments sometimes.
How about a 4 week trial? Then have this conversation again.

*If it doesn't irreversibly flatten everything from the past that is!
Flat for me!
I make that 8 vs 9 in favour of at least trying flat so far.
def flat fro me
also dont know if its poss but I know other forums I use do it,is it poss to have alist of recent posts we have made so we can keeo track-just an idea as I know I often answer a thread and then cant remember where it was so the answer gets lost
cant see my last message but def flat for me and also just worked out how to look at my latest activity-thats of course if it hasnt been deleted lol
Click on "My Page" for the most recent and then "Discussions " to see them all.
Okay, so we're going to gve flat a go and see how that works.

May I be the first to react with horror and revulsion at the flat style?

No context, no sense of what people are responding to and a hideous block of raw HTML splattered into the reply box whenever you hit "Reply to This" on someone's post.

I like citations/quoting, but the Ning implementation is so brain-dead as to be unusable. And I know how to edit the HTML to work properly.
