Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Dear HoL members,

Plans are being discussed by health officials that would dramatically alter the way people in Tottenham access health services. Proposals have surfaced which could see the North Middlesex Hospital and The Whittington downgraded to ‘local hospitals’, losing their 24 hour A&E departments and significantly reducing the important role they play in our community.

I know many of you on this forum (given your Harringay locations) will be particularly concerned about the latter, but it is important that we do not allow this issue to be one of choosing between two hospitals.

As one of the only boroughs without a main hospital with an A&E we need more investment in health – not less. In a borough where male life expectancy falls by 7.2 years within two miles we simply cannot afford to make cuts to these vital services.

The North Middlesex and The Whittington are the closest hospitals for the majority of the people of Tottenham. The distance to any of the other closest hospitals, including Whipps Cross and Homerton is more than twice as far as to The North Middlesex. The Royal Free in Hampstead is three times as far.

As a father of two young children I am not prepared to gamble with the extra minutes it would take to reach the A&E departments at any of those hospitals. Please join me in signing the petition to save the A&E services at The Whittington and The North Middlesex which you can find here: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/savenorthlondonhospitals/

All the best,
David

There are two more petitions at:

And worth noting the following, from an unsourced email:

Great news from Camden Keep Our NHS Public campaigners...

  • In July NHS Camden decided to award the contract for a new so called GP led health centre to a private company Care UK.
  • Two weeks ago they announced they would not be challenging our case against their lack of consultation in the High Court.
  • They then presented new plans for two 'easy access centres' with consultation due to start on 1st December.
  • This week they have withdrawn these proposals from the Council's Scrutiny Committee and do not propose bringing any new proposals until after the election in summer or autumn 2010.

People across Camden have signed petitions, come to meetings and joined demonstrations and protests. We have made our voices heard that these privatisation plans have gone too far.

Now we need to use that same power to fight against other privatisation threats and to make sure we get the money spent on services that patients really need.

People Power does work.

Alan - not all MPs agree with the government on everything

The Parliament as a whole has now seen six defeats, caused by backbench dissent, on whipped votes. No Parliament with a majority of over 60 has seen this many defeats in the post-war era.

(Not my normal reading!)
He is indeed and perhaps this will act a a wake up call to all those who think market forces should prevail!
When did DL last vote against this government then?
Last night at a full council meeting, an emergency motion was put up by the LDs which won unanimous cross party support to resist this move.
Very good news, Peter. Let's hope they're doing the same in Islington, Enfield, Barnet.
See this event about a public campaign meeting.
