Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi everyone

I hope that someone will be able to assist.  We live on the Ladder and have an entrance hall with the Victorian mosaic tiles and glasswork.  Some of the tiles are in bad condition / have fallen out of position, and some of the glass is smashed.

As a lot of the houses in Harringay have the beautiful old tiling, we wondered whether anyone has any spare mosaic tiles - and/or whether you would recommend anyone local for this work?

Photos are below.

Many thanks

Yousef

Check the tag I've added for Victorian floor tiles (encaustic tiles). You may find some links there also for wall tiles and even glass.

In my opinion, as far as the glass in concerned, you might do better than replacing like for like on the glass. Much of the glass used for the bigger panes on front doors on the Ladder was of the cheap printed variety - usually a bird scene. In my opinion, there are much nicer old style or modern sympathetic-style options. The coloured glass used in the small upper panes and transom windows is worth replacing.

Thanks very much Hugh - this is really helpful

I used a gentleman called Kieron who lives in North London and restored a floor which looks exactly like yours. He was very reasonable and a really nice person. He changed the broken tiles and then cleaned the tiles to restore their original colour. His email is info@victoriantiler.com. Not sure I still have his mobile, but you can probably find it on his website. I recommend using specialistic victorian tilers as they would know which colours work best as a match to your floor and can source them for you.

Thanks Anton - this is really helpful

Hi again, I am bumping up this post because we've contacted some of the recommended tilers but had zero luck. Many say they will come and give a quote but never turn up - perhaps this job is too small. I can see (and hear!) a lot of building work going on in the ladder. I am wondering if any neighbours are employing a tiler at the moment or will be very soon and, perhaps he/she will be willing to take on a small job nearby? Thank you for your help
