Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

For those (like me) who have been wondering if there's been a plane flying back and forth over Harringay today, the answer is yes - apparently it's an Ordnance Survey plane:

Looks like it's still doing circuits, although now a bit further to the east:

Actually, further down that tweet thread an Ordnance survey person says it is not them.

There's a suggestion it could be someone like Google...".The narrow strips suggest a high overlap which is better for a 3D image.Other reasons could be LiDAR used by EA etc.If spotted on a cold noght could be thermal surveys.Used by police for detecting illegal 'farms' in roof space ..and LA for roof insulation"

Here's a discussion from 2016 on this topic, though no absolute conclusion was reached:

https://www.harringayonline.com/forum/topics/spy-plane-over-london-...

A couple of the links in there lead to companies that do flight surveys on contract, including checking that airport radar systems are correctly calibrated, hence the repeated narrowly-spaced parallel passes.

Given that the flight path goes up & down the East Coast mainline, it could be Network Rail or a contractor - e.g. preparing for the new digital signalling system - https://www.railtech.com/infrastructure/2020/03/27/digital-transfor...

So this has been happening all throught the "lockdown".

I wondered if it was something like google with a LIDAR sensor for 3d mapping the buildings? (LIDAR = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lidar

With those sensors you could actually map the tree canopy development during the spring as well. I'm going to keep looking...
