An A&E department for Haringey!
Dear all,
I hope you can support this excellent campaign for an A&E department at St Ann's Hospital. I'm amazed that Haringey is the only Borough it appears not to have its own A&E!!!

As much as it would be handy, four miles to travel to an A&E department is pretty damn good based on national stats considering most of them have walk in clinics and you can be treated very quickly now.
North Mid, Whittington and the Royal Free are all within small distances from here.
Considering the lack of investment over the years and privatisation policy the Tories had on the NHS I find this a little odd.

A&E s have a great deal of highly trained support staff working around the clock in resuscitation, radiology, theatres etc, etc, which is why they are in general hospitals which have specialist wards (cardiology, ITU, surgical, paediatric ) to care for the patients that are admitted. So do you envisage this for St Anns?

Sorry but I don't see how this would work. As Maggie says, there is a whole host of specialisms that you'd imagine are fundamental to providing good A&E care, and I can't see any way in which it makes sense for these all to be provided at St Anns. So how would it work - wouldn't the really serious cases only end up having to be transferred to the Whittington etc anyway?
Nobody in Harringay has far to go to a local hospital - when I hear stories from friends elsewhere in the country I only ever feel very lucky being this close to a choice of hospitals. My parents have a journey of one and a half hours!
I don't know the history of what happened at St Ann's, and I would love it to be used in some way that isn't just a potential housing development. But I can't see this as having a hope of being acted upon, particularly in the current climate as regards public spending.

Unfortunately Haringey is on the cusp of 5 boroughs & it seems that the plan is to have major trauma centres in the centre of London with regional "cottage / local" hospitals nearby for non emergencies & outpatients of which St Ann's is one.
As an unfortunately regular user of the NHS the plans are well progressed and stopping the runaway train may well be impossible.
My advice is that it is better to join the trusts, get on the boards and make your feelings known / work on things from the inside.
Whilst not the system that we would all hope for, I would suggest watching Michael Moore's film Sicko could help us appreciate how lucky we are, and then inspire us to get involved in the "system" to make improvements that are needed.

As the wheel turns....
It seems no time at all - 20 years ? - since cottage hospitals were being phased out in favour of centralised monoliths.
It would be nice to see them brought back.

Just out of interest who was it that closed hundreds of cottage hospitals and small A&E departments in the 80's so that people in rural areas were even further away from medical assistance? Mmmmm let me think now........?

I think that I'm going to watch Panorama this week as this is what happened to us - NHS passed to lovely private hospital in St John's Wood. "What sandwiches would I like & to drink?" When my daughter had her tonsils out. No follow up appointment at RNTNE yet. This was over a year ago.
Luckily she was ok & I made her rest as I knew the risks. I think I will get this followed up at Great Ormond Street when we're next there......
