Equalities Minister Harriet Harman yesterday set out proposals to legally oblige all public bodies to bring about reductions in the gap between rich and poor. The move would mean town halls and other public service bodies having to direct attentions towards disadvantaged neighbourhoods.
There is no way on earth you are going to see council tax from west Haringey used to spruce up east Haringey. I wish they'd just stop with the legislation.
There is nothing wrong with being poor as long as your children have access to a good education and there is a decent roof over your head.
I didn't say I wanted a more equal society. I just wanted the people that were poor to have reasonable housing and access to universally decent education. I'm happy for them to sit there and be poor. They don't offend me.
Living on your wage week to week.
Being one small step away from having to rely on the state or relying on it already.
Not being able to buy someone a present.
Poverty offends me, poor people do not. They're not the same thing.
People struggling to make ends meet I am happy to support through my taxes but I'm not happy to "enrich them" so that they're "more equal" in that way (handouts are not good for anyone's self esteem). Enriching is the job of education.

It'd be interesting to know the extent to which this is already the situation. Nora, do you know if expenditure is currently tracked against the income of the ultimate recipients?
If this scheme is carried through I wonder which budgets would be redistributed?
Surely it's individuals who are poor and disadvantaged, not neighbourhoods ?
This looks like spray money in all directions, hoping that some will land where it's needed.
Make those who can afford it pay Council Tax and Income Tax. Let those who can't claim Benefits. Result - reduction in the gap between rich and poor. Simple ?
The Labour Party had years in opposition to identify this problem. The Labour Government has had 12 years in power to do something about it. Why has Ms Harman suddenly come up with this striking initiative ?
Couldn't be the appproach of a General Election could it ? :-)
"(Ms Harman's) plan will also see education authorities forced to run campaigns in deprived areas to encourage parents to send their children to higher-achieving state schools."
Harriet, surely you'd want all these deprived kids to have the benefit of the London Oratory? Or didn't your lad and the Blair boys like it?
