Home owners face paying more council tax simply for enjoying nice views or having a patio or off-street parking. Reports say officials have secretly assessed more than 11 million homes for 'desirable features' as Labour prepares for a revaluation of council tax after a general election.
For a house with an oblique partial view of Tottenham and beyond, backing the Railway and fronting Wightman Road, with a mini-garage which no car has ever been able to enter, but with the (ever more remote) prospect of a (desirable) W1 bus stop at my front gate, with a garden rear-view of Chettle Court flats, Cement Factory & TrainWashfacility (in prospect), balanced by a corner of Ally Pally & Muswell Hill church spire (at the risk of a crick in my neck), and with a conservatory whose single glazing gave way to Double six years ago - will my current Council Tax on second highest Band go UP or DOWN from the make-believe assessment of 1991?
I'm sure the vast majority would go up! I remember looking at mine when I moved in in 2001 and it was already so far removed from which ever band it was in.
