Ally Pally : John 'Hoppy' Hopkins & Rock 'n' Roll in the 60s.

image: Jagger at Alexandra Palace 1964, by John Hopkins.

The Independent on Sunday reports on a exhibition of John Hopkin's 60s photos, many of famous musicians of the time. The IoS link doesn't include the excellent shots of Ally Pally during a through the night extravaganza of music by the Stones and John Lee Hooker, which are in the paper edition.

The photos show the Stones playing alongside the blues legend John Lee Hooker at an all-night gig at Alexandra Palace, just two months after the Rolling Stones released their eponymous debut album in 1964.

Exhibition coming up at the Idea Generation gallery in London.

Just found some images of the Victorian theatre at Ally Pally, taken Dec '08;

See more amazing photos of this theatre (in a very sorry state) here [NB. scroll down and click on an image for slideshow].
Once upon a time Alexandra Palace was at the centre of what was new and exciting.... now Razorlight play there ;-)

Personally I'd love to see some bands playing in the disused theatre. It's a wonderfully atmospheric venue and would suit anyone noirish and bleak!

I should really make my site a little more user friendly. It's grown a bit out of proportion recently. This link should do the job:

That link didn't work but this one might
Hi Tim, It that your site? I looked around for a name but couldn't find one!

I'm amazed no one has commented on this site regards those photos. They're great and I've certainly never seen any images before of that wonderful theatre.

Are there fairly regular tours of those areas of Ally Pally? Who organises them?
Thanks for fixing that link Liz!

Yes it's my site, very glad it's of interest Matt. Kind of a photo blog and place to talk about my homebrew guitar effects and moan in general. The free Ally Pally open days are about once a year from what I can see. It was 'publicised' a few pages into their site, but I saw a photocopied poster advertising it in a bakery window on Alexandra Park Road. The BBC studio was open on the same day (28th December?), with a few vintage radios, tvs, cameras and their uncannily lifelike(!) dummies. The theatre is really quite amazing though. There was a chap from the preservation society talking about it and answering questions. To restore it would be astronomically expensive, and there's doubt as to whether the area could support a 2000-seat theatre (even in its heyday it didn't make money). Although recently it's been used as a location - Katie Melua shot a video here apparently, but unfortunately I can't find it/stand her ;-)
Thanks Tim! Surely English Heritage could fine a few million ...
