Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Finsbury Park - 'a spike in violent night-time robberies' .... ?

This has been mentioned in another post on HOL;

'Local police have been reporting a spike in violent night-time robberies there. People ought to be aware of this and use the park with real caution at night.'

Think it needs highlighting in a separate post if this is a current issue. Anyone have details from the police?

This noting the number of and comments about robberies in Harringay Ward last month from the local police at last week's monthly residents meeting (LCSP). This is a somewhat sustained increase over the past few months. It's not an epidemic, but for Harringay it is a spike.

The Passage has also seen an increase in robberies. In, I think all cases, the victims are young men.

Don't go into the park at night unless you have to and be a bit street-smart for a while in the Passage, particularly if you are young man.

  • Finsbury Park x3
  • Harringay Passage x2 (Duckett Road area & Falkland Rd area)
  • West Green Road/Turnpike Lane (attempted/nothing taken).

All of the Finsbury Park incidents took place at night when the park is (or should be) closed. The Passage incidents both took place in the late afternoon.

Thanks Hugh. Any idea what was taken off these 'young men'? Phones, money? Or are we talking about rival drug dealers possibly? 'Late afternoon' is even more concerning I think. Obv all robberies are a concern.

If I remember right it was anything of value.

I find this thread unhelpful and just a bit irresponsible.

In summary we learn there were 3 robberies in Finsbury Park while the park was closed, 2 in the passage, and an attempted robbery near TPL.  Over what period?  Were the 'violent'?

We're told, this in an increase. In fact, it's a 'spike'.

But according to the Police data, it is quite insignificant. There's a seasonality apparent in the Robbery statistics whereby they increase slightly over the summer months (more people out and about, and later). This summer's increase was the lowest in several years. As for a sustained increase, June saw 9 robberies in Harringay Ward, July 9, and just 3 in August. No spike and a smaller-than-normal seasonal increase.

I watched The Croods for the first time a couple of nights ago. Grug, the stone age protagonist's favourite quote was "Never not be afraid".

Don't be like Grug.

It's as helpful as I can be, I'm afraid. You'll note that I posted no screaming headline, but fed in, on another thread, what was relevant and gave further data on being asked for info.

The stats reported by the Harringay police at the monthly residents' meeting are always monthly.

The discussion at last week's residents' meeting was around the fact that there are more robberies in the Park and the Passage and that they're more aggressive. What seems new is that they're being committed by groups of young men usually armed with a knife.

Personally, I value hearing about crime themes from those involved on the ground. Stats only get you so far.

So, whilst I thank you for your frank feedback, perhaps it best that you stick to the Croods. Others might value having unembellished data and impressions as reported by our local beat bobbies.

I think the headline is fairly screaming, whether you wrote it or not. I referred to the thread (which obviously includes the headline).

There was no indication that the data was monthly, though I appreciate you editing the original response to now state this.

The stats (that you have oddly suggested may be embellished) are Safer Neighbourhoods data as collected by the Metropolitan Police. I can only imagine they get the data directly from those 'on the ground'.

I presented the data in context, that context formed my opinion that there has been no 'spike' and a lower-than-normal seasonal increase in Robberies.

Yes, I clarified the period the data represented following your comment. I hope that was helpful.

No, there was no suggestion that the police stats are embellished. I simply said what I reported isn’t. It comes from the horse’s mouth. However, any stats only give part of the picture. I’m not really sure exactly what I’m looking at in the set you reproduced. I’ve no investment in skewing the interpretation one way or the other. I’m simply reporting what our local bobbies have said. I sit through lengthy police feedback every month. What we heard this month felt like it represented a step change.

Part of the wider picture is what Michael has reported.  The drug dealing around Ducketts has been pushed out by police action. It appears that a part of it has been pushed this way. It seems that along with it has come a different sort of crime.

Let’s hope it drops off again.

The data presented were for 'Robberies' only.

The website offers a very granular look at overall crime.

The data at https://www.met.police.uk/sd/stats-and-data/met/crime-data-dashboard/ is I think what you're using. Yes, it's useful data and it's a helpful part of the picture, but it doesn't drill down into the circumstances of each crime, nor exactly where in the ward they took place. What I value about the info provided by our local bobbies is that they do add this detail.

In the eleven years since I set this site up, I've never tried to stir up fear of crime and I'm not seeking to do that now. However, in the context of a tale of a female resident being advised to walk through the park at night, I thought it was worth sharing what I heard last week (to say nothing of the murder in the park last Christmas).

What I've heard from our local bobbies means that as things stand right now, I would advise people to think twice, and then think again, about going into the park at night.

Other thread on here have reported a very visible presence of dealing In and around the Passage late afternoons and early evenings since the summer. While the stats are for reported crime the ones were a young bloke gets turned over during a deal probably means a lot of it is never reported.  We have a Deliveroo style drugs service chap who comes to our street (and others I imagine) on a regular basis. Friday evening he was so ripped he took a header into a garden wall and over into the bins

Good points. Dealing is still around the passage/streets but ... over the last couple months around the northern part of the ladder it seems less, probably hleped by the undercover police ops.

As to your story re the drugs to door service chap, the moneyed middle classes will always need their coke

Very useful Hugh, thanks
