Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I have looked with great interest at the old photos of Harringay Racetrack.

Has anyone got any photos they can post of The Hook Kennels, Northaw, which was the kennels which serviced Harringay Racetrack?  My mum used to work there as a kennel maid May, 1949 to Christmas 1950 and still thinks foundly of it.  Now in her 80's, I would love to see some photos of how the kennels used to be and also how they looked before they closed.  Many thanks.

Christine

Thank You, Marion, for the kind remarks. I do remember Peter, of course and I liked John.

Have not seen son, David, for a while, but he became famous as a Chelsea Supporter aka "Northaw Dave"

Tessa and I are in reasonable health, and pleased to hear you are good.

Thanks again.........

David

Hi Carol, why not share the photos here?

Thank you for the kind comments. I remember you, Yorkie, and it was lovely to hear what you had to say.

We are still here to moan about life, and to read the names has been a thrill. I do not know what happened to John, Ray was taken, sadly, very early in my retirement. I seem to remember a ferret and wonderful pine martin living in the kitchen at Northaw?

Ken, Richard and Jimmy all remain in my mind, but I visited Randy and Peggy in Devon until his death in about 1986...

Thanx again

Regards

David

Hi carol. I live at 3 Hook lane. I wondered whether you remember 3 cottages being demolished called Hook Cottages I believe it was prior to the renovations taking place. If you do can you remember what year that was in at all?

You mentioned in your post that you lived in the cottages from 1970 to 1985.

Many thanks Sandra moseley

Hi Christine, I'm hoping you and your mum are well. I have found a 1955 article on the kennels at Northaw and am wondering if your mum knew a lass called Molly Reynolds who worked there for a few years. There are a couple of photos in the article before the new hostel was built.

Adrian

Hi Adrian  I remember Molly Reynolds she worked at the kennels for a quite a few years, I remember her as I grew up she was good friends with my parents.

caroline

Hi Caroline, I meet Molly when I was about 9 years old. She was one of my dads friends partner, a builder called Jim Mulligan, my Dad was Jack Hurt. They had a dog with Randy Singleton which is how Molly met Jim. and he took her away up to Preston. It was a pity as I believe Molly was on course to become the first GRA woman trainer. Molly and Jim split up in 1981 and I went to look at a car for her to buy. It was a cream Triumph Toledo. The next time I saw the car was outside the Assistant manager Scott's house. in 1982/83. I was working in Mick Puzeys kennels next door. I didn't quite believe it was the same car. I was 23/24 at the time. Scott told me the story of Molly, I never knew she had worked with Greyhounds and at Hook Kennels! I was working for Thames TV at the time on shift and worked for Mick 4 days a week. It was the only thing that kept me down here was working with the dogs again, Dad was a trainer for Preston dog track and then White City Manchester. And now I have found this article on Molly and Hook Kennels. Small world isn't it.

Thanks to Adrian Hurt for sharing his video of dogs being transported from Hook to Harringay.

Hello Again Everyone.
Does anyone remember Carole Turnbull and know what happened to her? She worked for me in the late 70's.
One never really appreciates people at the time, but she was probably the best kennel hand to work
for me in 25 years training, apart from being a kind and gentle person.
Take care everyone
Regards to You all!
