Printer not working yet to diagnose they recommend a .exe download
We have read a warning not to open files that end .exe, .bat or.sct. Yet HP recommend we download a diagnostic tool for our non-functioning new printer from a source that ends .exe. Is it too paranoid to avoid this? There seems to be no information on their web site on how to diagnose the problem ourselves. Fiendish!
Please, can we avoid this .exe file, or do you think it's OK after all?

.exe just means executable file - ie it launches a program that does something to your computer. If it's from a reputable source it's fine. Never open one that's been sent to you unsolicited, though.

My printer often goes wonky. I have an old Canon scanner/colour printer that I used loads for scanning. When it has a fit of the vapors on my I uninstall the print driver and then reinstall it. I have no idea what changes but if often seems to work. Have you given this a go yet?

Replying to Justin: Print driver only installed for the first time a few days ago! But that is a good tip and we'll try that if the .exe thing fails, thank you very much.
It takes a long while to face up to another attempt at this kind of tech!You are lucky still to have your old printer/scanner, eventually though it may be rejected by your other machines, like my printer was.

Success! it's started cooperating , only v e r y s l o w l y ... and with incorrect error messages.
But that does not matter. But we'll probably do the .exe thing recommended by HP.
