Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Can you Identify these Harringay Butterflies?

I woke this morning to a garden full of white butterflies (I think small whites). They seemed to particularly like the purple loosestrife growing by the pond.

After sitting and being enchanted for five minutes I went to find my phone. A lot of the butterflies had moved on, but I managed to catch the tail end of the invasion.

I have them too - I think they are small white because of the spot. I had a comma in the kitchen yesterday - the frilly orange and black one. There is a big butterfly count about to start nationwide, which it would be good to sign up for.

It’s likely to be a good year for many butterflies as they benefit from dry, warm conditions. We’re probanly seeing “normal” levels of emergence for July but because even Whites have been struggling with wet summers over the past few years it’s attracted our attention more. Let’s keep those flowers watered and the nectar flowing so they have food!

Do you know if moths also favour drier conditions? There seem to be a lot of moths around this year too.

I'm struck by how few moths there are compared to past times when you couldn't leave a door or window open without attracting loads. I've only seen a couple this year.

I had a huge one in my bathroom the other day. Not a problem - I opened the window wide and shut the door. It was gone by morning. But my mother will be here in a fortnight and she'll scream if she sees one!
