International Day against Homophobia - 17th May

It's often the big bullies that are most afraid..
The 17th May is the International Day against Homophobia. This week, one of the world's former Superpowers was so *afraid* of a group of around thirty LGTB demonstrators that it felt it necessary to end the demonstration violently.. which proves to those of us who are not prepared just to be 'swept under the carpet', that there is still a long way to go and still lots to do.

These days, many people in Western Europe 'pooh pooh' the need for such days of action, but they are still necessary - Iran regularly executes people just for being gay (often juveniles) - we have all seen the disgusting pictures before.. One thing is sure in my mind - I will never rest until the day comes when the people that sanction such murderers, are brought to justice.. and I'm convinced that it will come..

Love deserves respect
No different to racial attacks on people, homophobia often ends with someone loosing their life - a close friend of mine was murdered on Green Lanes in 1977 after a night out at Manor House. Sadly, over the last few years, homophobic ideas are having to be fought on a whole new front.

..and a kiss can be dangerous..
In Germany, where during the n*zi period hundreds of thousands of Gay Men & Lesbians were degraded, tortured and murdered; a national memorial to the dead has now been erected in the capital... I must say, reading the dedication, still gives me goosebumps..
Memorial

Lastly on a lighter note, gays haven't yet lost their sense of humour - won't allow themselves to be sidelined so do have some fun as well!.

I've not seen any literature/ advertising of this awareness day anywhere until reading this post. How odd!

Have I just been walking around with blinkers on or something?

Is it widely known about in Germany?
There is no co-incidence you mention Iran and n*zi germany together.
in 1936 Goebells visited the persian government to garner support for germanys views about anti- semitism and it's theorys about who were/not Aryan races. It is clear that his views resonated enough for persia to change its name to Iran.
(Aryan)
As far as I am aware, Iran had always been known as 'Iran' to the Iranians as the name is dervied from the zoroastrian religion which is native to Iran. Its just the West who used to call it Persia.

This is comparable to how the Germans call their own country 'Deutschland' but noone else in the world seems to have adopted the native name. Similarly, India is commonly referred to as 'Bharat' to Indians, its just everyone else that refers to the country as 'India'.
To return for a moment to the Day mentioned above also known as IDAHO, Haringey held an event at Bruce Castle yesterday. See here for a photo of Haringey's mayor speaking yesterday on TwitPic from Cllr Matt Cooke who also gave a speech.
Please let me qualify my last post with this reference

See the paragraph 'First Pahlavi era'
Thanks
@James, thanks for the link... I imagine I'm getting a bit OT on my discussion here, but just let me say, I'm not sure I like the tone of the article.. But anyway, it is Wikipedia therefore it is perhaps wise to be sceptical about 'some' wiki articles and the agendas behind them..

Just to counter the impression that the FRG is latently anti-semitic - here's a link to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany-Israel_relations
in which you'll see that Germany is Israel's most important supplier/supporter in Europe..

Read into these articles what you will...
I was trying to point out where Iran historically got it's extreme political views from. That's nothing whatsoever to do with modern Germany.
We can disagree on things but i'm going on what is generally accepted in history. My original post (we going in a circle) points out how we came to be where we are today with people being executed in iran for kissing.
I understand that James and I certainly wasn't criticising you personally, but I feel that the wiki article has an agenda..

attempting to link the modern with what is, as you say, historically accepted..
What part of the wiki article i refered to did you disagree with ?
i notice you used a wiki article to illustrate one of your points
Perhaps we should continue this as a private conversation..

I'll say again.. I'd didn't like the overall tone of the article and I feel it is written with an agenda behind it(see above). I used the other wiki article to illustrate how wiki tries to be 'all things to all men'..

and I did said .. that you should make your own mind up on their meaning..
Steve, thought you might also be interested in this link on the situation in Iraq.
Thanks hugh though we were talking about Iran :-)
