Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This Spring has really taken her time arriving but at 16.15 on 20th March (which was Newroz, in case you're wondering) the sun came out and it felt like *this* time Spring really meant to get her act together.

There's warmth in the sun, the birds are building nests and FINALLY I find bees in my front garden, warming themselves on the boiling hot pebbledash of my house (which I dislike but insects seem to love) and looking for food.

My first bee pic of the year was a rather hastily taken one, laden as I was with shopping, and is of a mining bee* (Andrena carantonica).

The first of many beepix no doubt, as I'm a terrible insect botherer but I'm glad to finally see the bees back in town

*I think

I think I'd have gone for Common Carder Bee

Its bum was too black for common carder I thought but you could be right,

I don't claim to be a bee expert at all but I always start from the common species for the time of year and location before thinking about anything rarer. Googling Common Carder does show some pretty similar bees.

Oh yes, you're likely to be right. It is the right time for Andrena and caratonica is a very common species, but it may have been a bit large for one of those now I consider it further.

I saw a bumblebee yesterday! Always so nice when the bees appear.

As an experiment I put one of our solitary bee nesting 'panels' on the external wall of our 2nd Fl flat on Grand Parade - so 7 metres above the ground - to see if they get used at such a height - and they do! Obviously bees will use the closest suitable nesting to their forage/nectar & pollen sources, but interesting that you can't always presume what will and won't get used

Wildlife in cities!

Yes, saw one this morning in our garden! Beginning to feel like spring at last...
