Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Anyone in Fairfax road or the ladder has a power cut? We're with SSE and nearly an hour now without power. Called them and they said there is a problem with an underground cable and they don't know when it's gonna be fixed and I really need it to be fixed asap.

UK Power Networks are responsible for the cables and transformers for the Greater London Area. The list of current power cuts and status can be found at http://ukpower.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/power-cut-list

All our power is out at the green lanes end of fairfax

Still off in Fairfax. Although some houses seem to have power. Bit odd. Resolution time showing as 7-8pm. Fingers crossed...

Thanks a lot Tris. Didn't realise streets are cabled like that. Makes sense of the random nature of the power cut.

Seems to be back on now after one false start... woohoo!

And if you (hopefully don't) have a subsequent power cut of 12 hours or more, UK Power Networks (thanks EyeSpy above) are the people you contact to claim compensation for loss of service (not consequential loss though) - happened to us a couple of years ago.

They were pretty good at keeping us in the loop about time to fix the fault too.

Thanks Gordon

Luckily our tropical fish survived. Unluckily, the 5 second power surge when power came back, then off and on again  killed the boiler. Changed the fuse etc but think the PCB needs replacing. Maybe I'll ask if anybody knows a good plumber... Shame about consequential loss. Mind you, it's so rare nowadays we can't complain. I was telling my daughter about power cuts in the seventies. She was incredulous that I was alive in the seventies...

Boiler - same happened to our neighbours with our power cut, and one is an electrician so he was on the case at once.

As for the 70s/Three Day Week, lighting candles seemed so romantic then - well, we were early 20s..... Though it was a pain studying.

Too late for some now, but if you have a power cut it's probably wise to unplug sensitive stuff like computers and their hubs, TV sets etc. There should be a wall-mounted switch to cut the power to your boiler so turn that off too. You can turn them back on when the power is restored. That way, they won't be hit by the initial surge when the power comes back on.
