Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I swung by Cafe Lemon today and had a good chat with co-owner, Cem Kaplan. Our conversation gave me fascinating new insights into the current situation in Turkey. One of the things I learned (though as I write this I fear I'm too publicly owning my own ignorance) was of the new style of peaceful protest. As police energy wears out and the army are being prepared for action on the streets, Turkey's citizens are protesting by simply standing stock still wherever the feeling takes them and standing there for hours until their place is taken by another. Sometimes these protests are by individuals, sometimes by groups.

Cem showed me some photos from his Facebook news stream. At my request he has kindly sent them through for me to share. All tell a tale, though I found the first particularly poignant.

Amazing.  Thanks for sharing.

Wow. That is very moving. The one third from bottom with shadows and shoes, but no people, is that just digital trickery?

Looks like digital darkroom work. You can see the artefacts of where the people have been airbrushed out. Personally, I don't knock it for that reason. I think it's a strong image.

More here via Cem's Facebook page.

Yes it's all over twitter in Turkey. Beeb. 'The standing man'.

........and I've just been sent a link from yesterday's Guardian - it seems like this news only broke in the UK yesterday then.

Good to see these protests highlighted here!

Their neighbours in Bulgaria have taken to the streets again against corruption and poor government for the second time this year and adopting some of the Taksim tactics. Showing solidarity with their stance against their own government. Wonder how Bulgarians here in Haringey, and we have a few neighbours from this country, are feeling? We should support them too!
