Another excellent gig at The Salisbury on Sunday night
This night presents two duos, both featuring the versatile reeds player Andrew Woolf.
In the first set, Andrew (clarinet) plays with Luiz Morais (seven-string acoustic guitar), performing a selection of Brazilian choro - a traditional style of music which originated in late-19th century Rio de Janeiro and still flourishes across Brazil today, featuring intricate melodies, lively rhythms and playful improvisation.
The second set presents Andrew (on tenor saxophone) with Ryan Williams (electric guitar). Long-term collaborators in a variety of groups since their student days together, their original duo project creates a full, varied and atmospheric musical world whose textures range from multi-layered, sensuous soundscapes to delicate, contrapuntal melodies.
The shared instrumentations of woodwind plus guitar highlight the more contrasting aspects of the two duos, encompassing traditional/modern, acoustic/electric, composed/improvised. A special and rare opportunity to hear music from two different yet complementary perspectives alongside each other.
