Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

LGA researchers rated 11 bodies on their accountability, value for money and openness, concluding that local people had too little say over their work and they provided little value for money.

All the quangos in question had a higher proportion of staff on salaries over £100,000 than local government does, the study stated.

Very interesting Liz. I am disappointed that the Charity Commission did not make it onto the list. I wonder if it does not constitute a Quango? It is like a government department, but without a responsible minister and so acts pretty independently – almost a law unto itself. In my experience it is approximately useless, even though they have great reserve powers.

They come down hard on tiny little charities, but with big ones (can you think of any locally? maybe ones where the Trustee is a local authority?) they regulate and rule with all the weight of a feather. They do manage to push lots of pens and move lots of paper though. The party-politically appointed Chair, Dame Suzy Leather, is on about £78k for three days-a-week work.
