Thanks Hugh. This is a really good site, I've been in Harringay for six years but I've learnt loads since being on here. I'll definitely check out some of the markets, hopefully use some of the tradesmen, and keep my eyes peeled for the street art chap. I eyed an abandoned mattress at the end of my road quite differently after seeing his work.

Hi Hugh, thanks for the warm welcome!

    Thank you for the welcome!

Hi Hugh - thanks very much indeed for the lovely welcome. We are moving to Harringay at the end of this month after more than a year of discussions and visits and seeing houses and we're very very excited. It's perfect for us and for our little daughter, who hopefully will get into one of the primary schools... Harringay Online was very influential in the decision - it's an amazing community, so genuinely involved and committed to making the area a great place to live. I grew up in North London (Highgate, with lots of friends in Crouch End and Muswell Hill) and it's great to be coming back. We used the website to help make many of the decisions. You've got an amazing online community here, which can only be a reflection of the spirit of the neighbourhood. We look forward to living here and contributing to the community, online and off. Best wishes

    Hi Hugh

Sorry to bother you but struggling to upload an image for the Art in the Park event I've just added for 21 July 2013 in Downhills Park.  Have had a brilliant flyer designed but am clearly missing something very obvious in how to get that to accompany the event post - can you help?  Many thanks.  Flyer attached.

Thanks Hugh - I've been a member for a while, my question was about how to upload a picture to an event, can you help with that at all?

    cheers

Ignore that last request, just figured it out, was the type of file I was trying to upload.  Should be fine now.

following on from my days in my Grandmothers house at 123 Wightman Rd.
I was reminded of the time in WW2, when my Mother Marjorie and her older brother Charlie refused to go to the air raid shelter in the undergroud Stn. but instead got on the roof and tried to take shots overhead at the Luftwaffe with an air rifle, and slept at night in the coal cellar, it was just their foolhardy response to the knowledge that their eldest brother Sydney had been captured and made a Pow.??

When I as a child moved up the hill to no.9 there was a small engineering co. around the corner, - it is now a Tappas bar.
At the time there were quite a few German residents in the area and this company was named Braun (although no relation to Eva) they specialised in brass turned components, and one could hear the high pitch of high speed lathe turning all day.
At the far end of our garden was an old apple tree from which I would perch high up enabling me to train spot. From this position I could see down line almost to Hornsey Stn.
I did a painting of this view which later on enabled me to attend the Hornsey College of Art.
As a holiday job, I got to work at the Hornsey Depot unloading whiskey off the rail trucks. I can remember to this day the the almost explosive smell when the manager would break open the seals and open the truck doors. This leakage would have been due to breakages enroute. The lads would pour a measure or three! from the corner of the damaged cardboard carton -thus retaining the broken glass inside!! Short of any
damages they would often kick in the side of a carton? The work was very hard but it made me fit, and I earnt so much that I nearly did not return to college.
However, I continued the course which enabled me to become at 20 one of the youngest students to enter the Royal college of Art.

Hi Hugh, Having only joined HoL recently, I have really enjoyed sharing my memories with your readership, and can only thankyou for being given the opportunity to give my comments, although I do sometimes wonder whether your readers really want to hear my old rubbish?

However, my late father used to own the house 'Blythwood' in Blythwood Road N4.
It was demolished many years ago to make way for flats I believe, and I wondered whether you had any images on file of this property,

    Kindest regards
    Robert

re "Wassat? " ... inHOUSE thread
    Hi Hugh,
Its not possible for me to use the 'link' so my response gets separated from the preceding response, it should have come after
Phil K "...There's not a level floor or wall in the whole place!...".
You "Oh come on Phil, it's an event space! Give it a break..."
Me "Doh! thats just the expressionism of the photographer!!! Hugh".
I was referring to the camera angles, dark shadows etc favoured by German Expressionist film directors of the 1920s,
    Cheers, Maggie
ps this wont send a a message either.

Hi Hugh, the 'Market' section of Whats On is out of date, I know it may be up to the market organisers to change this but there may be people wandering around on a Sunday wondering where the markets are. Cheers.

    Dear Hugh,

    The Church is recognizing three women who are working hard for the progress and development of this community on Mother;s Day March 6. The service starts at 11am and finish 1pm during which the presentation will be done;

We would be delighted if you can attend the occasion to catch the news for the community with your camera.

Something similar will be done for the men on Father's day in June and you are also invited.

The caption is 'Church Honours community women'.

    Looking forward to seeing you

    warmest wishes

I have been using HO as a viewer all this time just never had cause to get an account before. It's a great site.

Thanks Hugh. Hopefully Melanie will see my comment and know I'm not ignoring her - it's just Gremlins in the system. It says she is a connection but when I try and reply it says select a recipient. Very odd.

  • Coffee and Computers

Hugh, thanks for your prompt response. I'm not sure I follow you - are you saying that the event, (I tried to post 4 times), is listed? I don't think so. Regards. Eric

    I stand corrected! Thanks.

If you study the photo, there is a car on the right just above the wing mirror. It could be a motor cycle travelling at up to 30 mph towards you. Imagine the car, from which the photo was taken is about to turn right as the lights are changing. See the point?

It is Priory/Park Road Junction which was properly maintained up until about 2 years ago .... now the plants are only cut back when someone complains. It is an accident waiting to happen and Haringey will not commit to maintaining the junction properly.

Officers and Councillors are using the maintenance resource on vanity projects which should have a lower priority than safety. Parochialism at its worst concealed by Silo Mentality.

If we could get rid of the Silo Mentality, Haringey would be a much better place

Hello Hugh - i posted something in the  Forum about deculverting the Moselle as part of the Haringey Heartlands development.  planning decision is next Monday, so there's some degree of urgency.  I've been contacted by another HOLer, Maddy, suggesting i re-post to maximise exposure - is this acceptable practice on HOL? (i don't want to be spamming folks).  cheers, Nick

Thanks for extending the graph, Hugh, I wouldn't know where to start!

Hi Hugh My computer hard drive failed and am trying to reconnect to everything. I tried sending you a private email but the computer said it was blocked and I needed a certificate. Haven't a clue what that means. I can log in all right and have been a member for several years. Anyhow I had posted a Craft and Gift Event under events and was going to add some more stall information to it but the event is no longer posted on 7th October. 1) Has my computer hardware failure deleted it or 2) Have you removed it and everyone else who had posted events in October? There is now only 1 event. Thanks for your time in looking into this Lyn
  • Lyn Weber

OK Hugh thanks for your help will try again.

Hello Hugh: Actually I've been looking at Harringay Ketchup for quite a few years now.  Enjoy it a lot especially the old photos.  I'm exiled to California now so don't get to see the old neighbourhood too often.  I wonder if there are any photos of Edith Road and Fawley Road, Tottenham Hale in the archives.  is it possible for you to look.  Thanks, mate.  Brian

Hi Hugh,  I will follow up your suggested link.   But was I wrong to send a comment to jack63 ?   Your comment has left me a little confused.

  • John Shulver

Thanks Hugh.  As suggested I logged on to Bethany's site and read account of her visit to The Western Front with much interest.   From that I went onto the Harringay Remembers site.  Most informative.    I will be contacting Bethany very soon.

    Thanks again.

  • John Shulver

Hello Hugh......... Back in late November I was searching for info on my Grandfather KIA in WW1.   You spotted my search and suggested I try Bethany Burrows.  It appears she didn't see my original request but succeeded in contacting her just yesterday.   She has supplied so much info to me in space of a few hours.........unbelievable !    So I just wanted to say thanks so very much for your suggestion Hugh.   Wonderful site this.

    Hi Hugh

I have found the email you wrote in 2012 reffering to Metropolitan Care and Repair.  This is the organisation I was looking for.  Left a message for them, hopefully they are still at Manor House and still do what they were doing in 2012. Will update when I get confirmation.

Can't believe it is so difficult to recycle/reuse common electrical items locally.  I started enquiries with the Council followed by Veolia.  It was suggested I take them to Western Road but from past visits to recycle other things I have seen electricals left open to the rain which is not good for reusable or breaking down for parts. He agreed and could not explain where the equipment ends up.

Hi Hugh....I want to leave  commercial message on general forum re offering services. I see to remember I need to pay a fee. Please remind me how?

    Thanks

Hi Hugh I note you have edited Brian Mahoney's response to my post. I nevertheless find it insulting and abusive as it stands. I know you don't like to be heavy handed and encourage robust debate, but I think a line has been crossed. This individual makes a point of making personal attacks on me and is clearly a nasty piece of work.

  • Caroline Moon

Not sure if garden image has been approved as I can’t read your comment Hugh.

Hi Hugh, the bakers on the corner of Hewett Road was ‘Crisps’. My cousin and I were sent by our Gran. to buy a couple of large loaves every Saturday morning. The charge I think was one penny three farthings.
