I can see the send a message function on your page, but not others I have checked. Perhaps they selected an option not to be included on email when registering for the site? Thanks for your help getting to grips with the technical aspects of keeping in touch.

    Hugh,

I have finally moved in on the ladder and had registered on this website before i moved in. But it is finally done and i am now a proud resident!
Just to let you know that my husband put an enquiry to the council about hornsey station improvement ( they are putting more lights on the crouch end side) so we asked about the ladder side and here is what they said:

    Dear Mr Burton,

    > I refer to your e-mail of 18th Nov 2007 sent to Cllr
    > Haley raising
    > concerns about safety of pedestrians using the
    > accesses to Hornsey
    > Station and apologise for the delay in replying.
    >
    > Thank you very much for your appreciation of the

    > carried out by the Council to the access to Hornsey
    > Station from

    > approach from the
    > Wightman Road end could be improved.
    >
    > The overall lanterns in the area are High Pressure
    > Sodium (not the white
    > lights you may feel brighter). These conform to the

    > under bridge lighting
    > and have included it in our next years proposals,

    >
    > A number of traffic calming measures have been

    > Wightman Road recently including the construction of
    > central islands, to

At least they answered really quickly!

I don't know how to post this to everyone but i'll get there!

Thanks for such a great website. If i have any info about the area, will try post it.

Have a nice freezing sunny day,

    Sophie.
  • Hugh

I moved there in 88 too. I was at 55 and moved over this way in 93............with a view to moving on and up. But what with one thing and another here I am still too.

Do you still have that awful property management company?
  • John

    Hello Hugh,
I don't actually live in Coningsby road anymore. I live in Italy now, moved out very many years ago. But I'm so glad I can get a feel of my old neighborhood thanks to "Harringay comunity". Hope you don't mind I'm not actually a resident NOW. Bye
  • Nilgun Canver

    Sorry, got cut off.
It will be helpful if you could up load Green Lanes Strategy Group newsletters. They are helpful to observe the progress made in the last 5 years. Dasos Maliotis, GL neigh. manager can e-mail you all e-copies of the newsletters.
I'll try to get to the Committee by 7.45pm tomorrow.
    Best wishes
    Nilgun

Hi Hugh, and thanks. I'm in Mount Pleasant Villas, off Mountview Road. I joined as I was looking for recommendations for tradesmen - I was after someone to fix our washing machine (sorted now!) and thought a local forum might be a good place to look. I don't know if the site features such local tips, but it might make a good section?

    Cheers, Matt

I have been working as a volunteer in Africa on and off for 12 years and when I come back I am always appalled at the state of the borough. I want to get to some meetings where I can find out what is happening and what residents are doing about it. Salisbury Road is limbo land I find. It used to be a nice place to live.
  • Dan Crown

    Hi Hugh....

....am glad to join such an interesting group...
I am a member of the Wightman Road N4 Residents Group, so am involved to some extent with the local community... Have lived in Harringay for over 8 years... so am keen to improve things and get involved...

    Thanks for the welcome..

    Regards Dan.
  • Liz

No I do want to understand the thinking. I want to know why a Starbucks in Hampstead can have the residents turning out in force to campaign but something undesirable like a plethora of bookies here in Green lanes doesn't galvanise the community in the same way even when it is clear from the on line buzz on places like fb and others that people don't want it. As I said to my hubby 'a damn great bookies opposite the clock in Crouch end would have caused uproar'. I think this community will change slowly but some kind of group, with sub groups for things like crime, children, etc. could hurry it along
  • Liz

No that's it and as I said in the discussion I started on the forum, one good measure of how strong a community is can be how happy people are to bring up families here and use LOCAL schools/ services and not take fright as soon as kids get to secondary school for example by sending kids out of borough or moving two yards from a popular school (Muswell Hill fro example). I'm probably a teacher who has experienced this twice talking now, not a parent, but lack of support for local schools by the whole community can cause terrible damage and start long decline in an area.
  • Liz

Still trying to get recruits! Have gone into traffic discussions now because that seems to get people more worked up than anything! Actually i go to sainsbury on Monday morning -dead. Bit insufferable to say that in the forum though!
  • Kake

Hello Hugh - yes, that's right! I've never used Ning before so I'm just trying to get the hang of it now. I can already see you seem to have quite a community here!
  • Mac

Hey Hugh. Well done on the site. It looks great and shows good positive community network already. I found you while searching for common voices on state of congestion at Arena shopping (girlfriend stuck for an hour today trying to get out). Many other issues to tackle things to enjoy together. Keep it up. Mac
  • Liz

    Attachment received. thanks
  • Nancy

    Hi Hugh
Well done for setting up this site. Great for finding out what's going locally. I have already been chatting to my neighbours via this site. So 21st century!
I have 2 young kids and as a result, a flailing career as an art director in kids' tv. I have set up my own business as a mural painter/ kids bedroom designer and have put together a very basic web site. Would it be possible to have a link to my website? I noticed that there were other artists on there. The address is www.nancyjackdesign.co.uk
    Let me know.
    Cheers
    Nancy
  • Carole

That was actually my intention!! I use computers all day, however this medium is a whole new ball game!!

    Will give it a go!
    Thanks
    Carole
  • Carole

I cant even find the message I posted, let alone allow other people to see it!!! HELP! Thanks Carole
  • empyrean_aisles

    Hi Hugh

The 'Send a Message' link only appears under the avatars of people who are my 'friends' (& perhaps because you have asked everyone who's joined the site to be your friend, it may seem as if everyone has that 'Send a Message' link by default?). I tried out this theory by looking at members who were my 'friends' and those who weren't, and it holds. So I think PedroK has to accept my invitation before the 'Send a Message' link becomes visible.

I don't mind - I think it's probably quite a sensible feature of Ning to prevent unwanted messaging and spam.

  • Alison P

God, sorry! Him, not you. We're married, so I'm the one who was doing the ear bending.

Fantastic site though, it is so wonderful knowing that you are not the only person who cares about the area you live in (and pondering the insanity of things like the Arena shopping centre!).
    Alison
  • Carole

If you are able to post my message about reincarnated Zig Zag for all to see that would be great....I still cant find orginal message...feel a training course coming on!! Many thanks Carole
  • David Barry

I am returning your comment Hugh: the Hornsey magazine is a free magazine (ie advertising financed) a rather stylish production. One place you can get it is in a display stand outside Budgens in Crouch End, I was doing a google search for it because I thought it would have a web site, and this is how I ended uo here. the Hornsey magazine, it would seem, does not have a web presence. I have no idea whether leaving a comment on your wall like this is a good way of responding to your comment...
  • Liz

Yes I know I've put another really long URL on my latest posting. I haven't had time to do my IT training yet.
Can we offer a (virtual) prize for the best suggestion for the name of the new school?!
  • Liz

I was thinking not real but how about a night out with the harringay/st ann's councillor of your choice?!

Blimey, free meals on green lanes. Are they still going? :)
  • Liz

Hmmm, Karen or Carolyn might be okay but as to the rest...
The Duckett's common group would be interesting but I'm committing to a lot of stuff at the moment and the husband might start getting fed up of babysitting after a hard day at the office if I take on any more projects!!
  • Alison P

    Hi Hugh
Thanks for joining the gardening group. Really hope it take off, will be interesting to find out what others are doing out back (and front!).
    Alison
  • Liz

Are you reading my mail, you bounder?!
  • Liz

Yeah, I know :) I often introduce a note of levity into proceedings...some would say its a strength, others would not but its just my sunny personality!
  • Anette

This is by baby! Sad, eh? :D
  • Alison P

    Hi Hugh

I like the meet the locals piece. I've always been interested in Yesir Helim and would love to know more about the owner/manager - it is one of my favourite local shops and never fails to impress visiting friends and relatives (esp their bread) ..
  • David Jones

    Hugh,

We don't have a residents' association as such. But we do have a Neighbourhood Watch through which we exchange views and share concerns.

    David
  • Liz

I've not gone bonkers leaving all those comments.
Just trying to get the rest of the Warham massive to join us.
  • Liz

The Warham massive are coming together
  • Paul

    Hi Hugh,

I'm contemplating a small wind turbine. Do you know if there are any on the ladder/a precedent etc? I believe they're a lot quieter and obtrusive than they used to be. Clearly there is a planning application and neighbours to consider but where I am I think I'd get a good gust and would get my investment back in 5-7 years. Any thoughts?

    Best, Paul
  • Alison P

    Brill, thanks.
  • Peter Griffin

Lived in Rutland Gardens from 1956 to 1972 and then moved to Canada. Visit my family in Tottenham a few times each year so I still wtach the changes
  • Anette

Not sure how, and this is like a little memorial for her. Silly, I know, but I loved her. I'm soppy.
  • Liz

    Grrr!
  • Liz

Thank you for giving up so much of your time to fight those Metrobet nasties. Me and my family are very grateful to you and the rest of the anti-bookie campaigners and we wish you the best of luck. Go get 'em!
  • Liz

Know any good books about the local area? Think I asked you this before...
  • Rachel Fisher

Thanks Hugh - the site is excellent. I've been saying for ages taht something like this should exist... well done making it happen.
  • Ruth

ok Hugh. I will be Ruthie - cheers. And what is does a ning stand for exactly?
  • Alison P

    Hi Hugh
Meant to say in earlier post about 'my street', congrats on the new job/client - sounds interesting. Will it mean less time on here?! How will we cope?!
  • matt

    So what's his angle?
  • RuthE

Hi Hugh, I have a message from you apparently but it doesnt appear on my page, would it appear somewhere else?
Thanks, great site by the way.
  • Liz

I think you've been reading over my virtual shoulder...
  • matt

Broccoli dear boy. Indeed the goat has been put out to pasture. Revolving photos, in keeping with new site header design. :)
  • matt

Thanks Hugh. I've been trying more than a few times to put a header image up!
  • John McMullan

flickr..... You're right, the flickr link was not a file.... http://www.flickr.com/photos/24470721@N03/2316725889/

    I'll do some more playing...
  • John McMullan

I had them on my local drive but it asked for a url when I clicked on the add image icon so I did the flickr thing...
