Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Haringey First World War Peace Forum

The Haringey First World War Peace Forum is a small informal group working in north London, researching the conscientious objectors who were associated with the districts of Hornsey, Tottenham and Wood Green (now comprising the London Borough of Haringey). In August this year we mounted a street re-enactment of a local anti-war meeting that took place on 5 August 1914. This event was well supported by the local traders association and enthusiastically received by the 200 people who attended.

We are in the process of compiling lists and potted biographies of the local men who resisted conscription as conscientious objectors and writing individual case studies on many of them. At the time of writing we have identified 137 men associated with Hornsey, 156 men associated with Tottenham and 54 men associated with Wood Green. We continue to search for people who may remember or be related to them and hope to gather more photographs as time goes on. We have presented the results so far at talks in local libraries and to local groups.

An exhibition, in conjunction with the Peace Pledge Union and Haringey Archives, is planned for the spring of 2015. We are also planning to stage another event in 2016 to mark the establishment of the three local military service tribunals and the many COs who appeared before them.
