Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This year marks a very special year for St. Paul's Church on Wightman Road, as it is celebrating two important anniversaries.  First up, it's 130 years since the first St. Paul's Church was started on the Ladder, in a temporary building on Burgoyne Road, known as the "Iron Church" – it started on 23 December 1883 and had six communicants on Christmas Day.  Secondly, it's 20 years since the dedication of the current St. Paul's Church – as many people will know (and some may remember from the time), the previous church building  burnt down in 1984 and was replaced by the modern structure that we see today, which was dedicated in 1993.  Today's building seems to have a "Marmite effect" (love it or hate it) on most people, and I've heard it called various nicknames locally, including the "Lego church", the "Toblerone" and the "space cannon", but I think we can all agree that as church architecture goes, it's distinctive.

As a result of these noteworthy milestones, the church will be spending a significant part of the summer (and probably the autumn!) partying, and we would like to invite everyone to join us to mark this special occasion.  So far, we have four events on the calendar, which are listed below – more details will follow a little closer to each event, and we have even more events in the pipeline over the coming months.  If you've always wondered what it's like inside the church, this summer would be the perfect time to pay us a visit and take a look around!

Saturday, 8 June 2013 – Come and Sing "The Mikado" with Music on the Ladder

Come and rehearse and perform Gilbert & Sullivan's classic operetta all in one day.  Rehearsals start at 1pm, and the performance will be at 7pm.  Singers £10, audience £5 – all payments on the door, but singers please let us know you're coming by e-mailing musicontheladder@gmail.com.

Saturday, 6 July 2013 – Traditional Summer Fayre, 11am to 4pm

This year's summer fayre promises to be our best yet.  Come along to find hand-made gifts and goodies and all manner of games and activities.

Friday, 12 July 2013 – Service of Thanksgiving, 7.30pm (followed by a party!)

The Bishop of Edmonton will be coming to celebrate a special service of thanksgiving for the dedication of the church building.  The service will be followed by a party to continue the celebrations.

Saturday, 20 July 2013 – Music on the Ladder – Concert of Choral Music, 7.30pm

This concert will be presented by a special choir brought together for the occasion and made up of people who sing in a number of local churches and in other local choirs. The concert will feature a varied selection of music.

For more information about all these events and more, please keep an eye on the church's website at www.saint-pauls-harringay.org.uk or follow the church on Twitter: @paulharringay.  You can find out more about Music on the Ladder and its events at www.facebook.com/musicontheladder or follow us on Twitter @musicontheladdr (that last "e" really isn't there).
