Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Prime Minister David Cameron this morning visited Tottenham to meet with community members following the disturbances in the area over the weekend of August 6.

Mr Cameron visited Haringey Council's Community Assistance Centre at Tottenham Green Leisure Centre, where he spoke with volunteers who have been working over the past 10 days to support those affected by recent events in the area.

Following the Prime Minister's visit, council Leader Claire Kober said:

"We welcome Mr Cameron's visit to the assistance centre, where he has been able to witness first hand a fraction of the fantastic community spirit which has abounded in Tottenham since the disturbances earlier this month.

"The response from local people has been overwhelming, with residents of all walks of life showing huge generosity - not just through donations of food, clothing and money, but also of their own spare time to support those most affected by the recent troubles.

"Having experienced Tottenham's unique sense of community, I hope that Mr Cameron takes away from his visit a strong sense of how vital it is that the Government provides ongoing support to help local residents an businesses move forward with their lives.

"Our priority now is to rebuild Tottenham for everyone who lives and works here. To do that, it is essential that the government gives urgent financial assistance to the efforts to get the area - and the community so harmed by these devastating events - back on it's feet.

"Together with partners, the council has worked tirelessly to improve Tottenham over the past 25 years and it is so important for that good work to be able to continue. To enable that to happen, investment by central government both now and in the longer term is essential.

"As I emphasised to the Deputy Prime Minister when he joined me for a tour of Tottenham in the immediate aftermath of the riots, we would like to see the government help the area through measures such as:
  • additional investment in employment and training opportunities for local young people in particular
  • support grants to help local business to re-establish themselves
  • designation of Tottenham as a Community Budget pilot area, allowing greater local influence over resources - driven by community engagement and design of services
  • support for ambitions for a Stadium-led regeneration in the area with partners Tottenham Hotspur FC e.g. through the Enterprise Zone and Regional Growth Fund bids for this area, as well as potential for gap funding associated with major regeneration."
