Can anyone please recommend a local structural engineer to review architectural drawings and give advice on a potential extension/side return?
thanks
Alex

He's 'old school', does his drawings by hand, semi-retired and we found him to be a very knowledgeable and helpful person for our project, and a very nice man to boot.

Hi Jessica
I've seen a couple of recommendations for Philip on here and was wondering how you got on with your project - were your builders fine to go off his drawings? I'm just wondering if some might prefer the whole CAD caboodle! Because otherwise he sounds perfect for a small project we need doing.
Thanks!
Michelle
Hi Michelle, the builders did question his drawings at one point arguing that he had been overly cautious about the support required when knocking through a wall. We were glad to devolve the discussion to the builders and Philip who was accommodating about tailoring his drawings and finding a safe and cost-effective structural solution. We were pleased - things like this can so easily escalate into massive extra costs on both extra building work and paying for new drawings. I'm not sure that CAD drawings and slicker engineers would make any difference in cases like these, though are probably a better option than Philip for big projects or new builds involving lots of new structural elements rather than working around an existing Victorian house like ours was. Good luck with your project and whoever you end up using to do the drawings, and if you do use him I hope you have a good experience as well. Jessica
Hi Jessica
Thanks for responding so quickly! I really appreciate the feedback. It sounds like Philip would be great for what we have in mind - we're in a Victorian house too and want some interior walls removing and a chimney breast either hollowed out or removed. Will give him a call now!
Thanks again
Michelle
Hi
We used BCS Consulting who seemed very professional and thorough (Although the work hasn't been done yet)

Good luck

In case anyone is looking I’d recommend
JS Consulting in Enfield
Paul Smith looked at a chimney breast that needed supports and the price was far cheaper than other quotes we had
