Old police station on St Ann's Road/Hermitage corner

Sorry if this has been covered already, I've been a bit out of the loop. But I noticed that the lovely old Police station building on St Ann's/Hermitage seems to have suffered significant fire damage recently. I know there is work going on next door (demolition of the newer building) but the pattern of the scorch marks suggests to me this was not a controlled fire and presumably arson. 

I wasn't aware of any plans to knock this building down - had assumed it was being turned into flats. Can anyone confirm? It looks like it could still be restored, but weird that it's in this state in the meantime.
