Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The owners of Cyplon have been talking about moving out of Harringay for a few years now. Today I noticed that they seem to have finally taken the plunge and the 'For Sale' signs are up. This double-fronted premises between Hewitt and Allison is particularly large and will no doubt have a market appeal.

I see that the Coral bookmakers that closed down next door has just opened as a travel agent. I'm not sure whether or not it's being run by the party vacating Cyplon.

Details attache for anyone interested.

Another thumbs up for Cyplon:

A few months ago a friend was flying to Dallas on a free American Airlines employee family ticket and had a question about visitor visa requirements. I popped into Cyplon and, although it was obvious I wasn't a paying customer. they listened patiently and looked up the www. address of the company which deals with temporary visitor permits.

I'm glad they will still be in business.

Antoinette, apologies if it was a little cryptic. My point is that if we take everything at face value and never ask any deeper questions then we live our lives in blissful ignorance of our impact to others. Tesco and other such chains thrive only because they are cheap and convenient, and because their consumers aren't aware of, or choose to ignore the social economic and environmental damage they cause. I think we deserve better, hence my original remark.

And until you enlarge on the " social, economic and environmental damage "

I guess we remain in blissful ignorance.

How do you feel about Lidl and Aldi, by the way ?

John,
I think it is in everyone's capability to do their own research, but as you ask, here's an interesting website that gives scores according to ethical practice. If you expand the 'ethical issues by category' sections it makes for some disturbing reading.
http://www.ethicalconsumer.org/ethical-company-ratings/tesco-ethica...

And this one is another source which compares a number of the brands. Lidl slightly better than Aldi and Tesco, but not top by any means. I think we secretly all wonder how they can afford to make things so cheap. Well, perhaps now we can have a better idea.

Your first link says detailed information is available to subscribers only.

The second is fair in that it says that generally supermarkets are responding to customer concerns about ethical sourcing of their products. It does seem that Tesco are lagging behind . Would you be happier if the Tesco were replaced by a Waitrose where many couldn't afford to shop ?

But I wonder, given that the alternative to supermarkets is the small independent retailer, how ethically-sourced are their products ?

What worries me is that in your reply #4 you appear to object to  consumers exercising their choice of where to shop.

Hi John,

Apologies, the first link opened up fine for me. I've copied some of the text below. I don't think a waitrose there would be much better. Yes, I would be happier if it were replaced by two smaller independent shops with a community focus. Harringay Local Store is a great example. Their food is ethically sourced, with local suppliers and ethical wholesalers such as Infinity foods.

Tesco is no cheaper than any other store, it just has hidden costs . What you save individually, is taken from us all collectively. When you take into account the damage it causes to society, I personally don't see how anyone can afford to shop at Tesco.

I certainly have no right to stop people exercising their free will but I do have the right to express my views over the future I would like for our community.

Company Score 1.5 out of 20

Environment - more info..
In November 2016, the company received a worst rating from Ethical Consumer for its lack of policy on the use of toxic chemicals for its electronic products. Tesco had a pledge for zero discharge of hazardous chemicals by 2020, but this did not include electronics, only agriculture, textiles and leather.

Tesco also received a worst rating for palm oil policy. A 'UK Palm Oil policy' dated from May 2016, did not cover its non-UK markets and only applies for its own brand products.

Animals - more info..
The company retails factory farmed meat and non free range eggs. The company scored a middle rating on animal testing, as it did not test own brand products on animals but did sell other branded products from companies that did still test on animals.

Politics - more info..
Concerns were raised by a number of shareholder groups in 2015 after Tesco’s remuneration report revealed that the company paid £4.13m in bonuses and salary to its chief executive Dave Lewis, for his first six months’ work, and a £1.2m payout to his predecessor who oversaw diving sales and profits.
In February 2016, Ethical Consumer gave Tesco a worst rating for the likely use of tax avoidance strategies.
The company had many subsidiaries in tax havens, including one in Hong Kong and four in Luxembourg, which Ethical Consumer considered likely to be used as part of a tax avoidance strategy.

Thanks Nick.

Of course.

Nick,
So, Your a waitrose shopper.
Andy,
No, I'm a Harringay Local Store shopper.
Nick

That's very likely not what it means.

As it is 2,100 sq ft but a 1,200 sq ft yard, the willingness to extend will be exactly that - they would be prepared to build into the yard to increase the store size. This is very common for landlord when they have a potential strong covenant tenant; build to the tenant specification. Interesting they see to think they could get such a tenant in that location. Could only be a supermarket really.

Ahh OK thanks Rob, that makes sense.

Another indication that retail leasehold values are hiking on green lanes. along with running costs - with those that have closed recently moving further out.
