Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I am wanting to install a fireplace (not a stove or woodburner) into the chimney breast of one of the rooms in our house and would like to know if anyone has any recommendations for someone who can do this. Our normal builders and decorators have said it's not something they would take on.

Cheers,

Nick

Are you just talking about putting in a fireplace surround (ie. not burning anything in the fireplace) because that's usually as simple as a couple of brackets screwed into the wall with a free-standing grate in the middle. I can recommend the Better Hearth on Holloway Road.  Obviously they supply and fit rather than just fit fireplaces.

It's the installation of the surround, the central part and laying the hearth - we're not sure whether to have it as a 'live' fire or just cosmetic, but aiming to have the potential to actually use it. Thanks for the suggestion, I will check them out...

Cosmetic would obviously be cheaper and (without wanting to point out the obvious) more ecologically sound. Even smoke-less fuels add pollutants. You'd need to do a smoke test to check the chimney is clear. .might need to be swept or repaired which would add to the cost.

We did get the chimney swept, but I think you're right - I don't think we want to be causing any more pollution than is already around. Cosmetic is probably how we'll go!

I think you also have to tell your house insurers if you have open fires and that bumps up your premium....

I've used these people - they were happy to make the trip up from south London http://www.rpsfireplaces.co.uk/

Thanks for the suggestion - was their price reasonable?

To be honest I really can't remember what we paid (it was cosmetic) but worth giving them a buzz for a quote.

If you are going down the cast iron 'real fire' route, try Ward's Antiques Fireplaces.  They are very, very good,

Hello,

I can strongly recommend Mike Seymour.

He is busy, and a straight talker (which I like ... some might find him 'direct'), and he has all the certifications for gas and solid fuel (HETAS) and does a fantastic job on installation of both fireplace and hearth. He's just done my reclaimed job in Fairfax Road.   http://www.firefitters.com/.  The HETAS web site also has listings of fitters.

If you are putting in a traditional fireplace, it can only be cosmetic - you are not allowed to burn wood on it as you're inside the London. There is a bit of a problem with pollution inside London and a lot of it is attributed to people illegally using fireplaces to burn wood. You'd therefor only be able to burn this sort of approved fuel: https://smokecontrol.defra.gov.uk/fuels.php?country=england or risk a £1000 fine.

If you want to burn logs, you'll need an approved appliance (i.e. stove): https://smokecontrol.defra.gov.uk/appliances.php?country=england

While enforcement is probably not on most council's agendas at the moment, with the high pollution in London, I'd imagine that it's only a matter of time before they start.

A wood burning stove is actually heaps more efficient and much safer too.

You've contradicted yourself there in your opening line - you can have a traditional fireplace if you only use smokeless fuel...
