Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I was shocked the other evening when I a man I encountered on Green Lanes made 'sex' noises at me - clucking and hissing. This hasn't happened to me for years - I am at the wrong end of my fifties and was bundled up in coat and scarves, so I can only assume it was a sort of reflex action at the sight of any woman. It made me feel quite intimidated and uncomfortable, which is doubtless the underlying purpose.

It also made me conscious that for younger women this must still be a daily experience - this was confirmed by a young friend. I wish I had said something to him at the time, although of course this risks escalating the issue.  I'd be interested to hear other women's experiences.

No wonder one of the placards on the Women's March read "Feminism - back by popular demand".

Oh Maddy, I'm sorry you had to experience that. These men are just twas. They get a kick out of unnerving you. I make a point of intervening when I see men harassing other women. I have blossomed into the role of interfering old battle axe. I'm not sure you're as bolshy as I. You were caught off guard so it's unsurprising you were unable to come up with a retort. When I was a younger slimmer model my favourite retort was "in your dreams, pencil dick"....I'm finding it very hard to imagine those words coming from you though!

I agree, if you can, shout them out. They exist because they think they can get away with it. Have a suitable retort ready, as Antoinette has wonderfully demonstrated.

I was really taken aback - it hasn't happened to me for many years.

Maybe spit patrol can add sexual harassment to their duties ?

Hard to prove - it's so fleeting but leaves a really bad feeling. I think a poster campaign might have some impact, if anyone bothered to read them.

Yep have experienced this type of behaviour with men driving by in their car. I find they are shocked if you shout at them or make a rude gesture. They are cowards who get their kicks by trying to intimidate women to make themselves feel 'bigger'. Make them know you think they are disgusting little pervs and don't let them have them the satisfaction of knowing them have unsettled you!

Yes they don't expect you to answer back
I called the police about a man sexually harassing and racially abusing a woman at a bus stop by Turnpike Lane. I told him his behaviour was inappropriate and he got closer and closer and stared at my crotch. Disgusting.
Report to police! Women shouldn't have to put up with it

I am sorry this happened, it is awful. I think we do need a campaign. I too am in my 50s and the other day a man followed me from GL, it was scary. So, a campaign highlighting the rights of women is due!
