Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Michael Donaghy - local poet
My late husband, the poet Michael Donaghy, was born in the Bronx, New York, but moved to Harringay in 1985, where he lived until his untimely death in 2004 at the age of 50.
Picador have this week published two new books by Michael, a Collected Poems containing all of his award-winning books, and a book of essays, reviews and interviews called "The Shape of the Dance", which is a fascinating and entertaining read for anyone who is interested in words and the process of writing.

Thank you for adding this Maddy. I had a look at the Southbank link. I noticed that they call him "one of the most gifted poets of his generation". An impressive tribute to Michael.
I was also interested to read the Wikipedia article on Michael .

Now there's a coincidence! There was a feature on the radio about Michael yesterday - hadn't heard of him before, and didn't know he was a local. Heard a poem of his called "The Excuse" (I think) Are the books out yet?

Fintan O'Toole has an interesting profile/review of "The Bronx poet who was an elastic paddy" in today's Irish Times (www.irishtimes.com), Weekend Review - Arts.The 'elastic' bit ? O'Toole writes: Donaghy is as Irish a figure as Samuel beckett or Eugene O'Neill or Elizabeth Bowen - which is to say a great deal in some respects and not at all in others.
