Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Just had a quick look through Lammy's twitter posts to see if he's voting against the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill coming before the house this week. Various Labour MPs have taken a stand against the three-line whip put in place by Corbyn.

Each MP has to decide if they are voting on behalf of the country which narrowly voted to leave the EU or for their constituency (who voted them in). The constituency of Tottenham voted strongly to remain.

Anyone know if Lammy has stated how he will vote?

This is one of the cases which has been in the papers - there are several others. People simply cannot be asked to surrender their passport for six months and be left in limbo.

There is also a question over the health insurance, which - it turns out - E.U. citizens are supposed to have taken out for periods when not in work (maternity leave, students etc), despite the EU saying this is not correct and they are covered by EHIC.

I think a lot of people are simply crossing their fingers and hoping it will be alright, but the government refuses to make any promises. Even if you are married to a British citizen you have no automatic right of residence.

Oh Maddy :(

The Dutch woman's case was exploded some time ago. She was asked to produce her passport to prove that she was an EU citizen with right of abode but refused.

Even the Guardian, which first publicised the case, accepted that she could have travelled, I think it was 12 miles, to produce her passport at an office where it would have been returned to her immediately and that she was being unreasonable in refusing.

I suspect that these concerns are all a hangover from the scaremongering Project Fear. There are a lot of accusations about the Leave camp lies during the Referendum campaign: none that I have seen about the misinformation put about by the Remainers.

There is also much confusion between Right of Residence and Application for Naturalisation ( or Citizenship ) for which the conditions are different.

The Hope Office has confirmed that nothing has yet changed. If people are being told they cannot have medical attention, it is by people who don't like immigrants, not by the Government.

Freudian slip - Home Office, not Hope

I have several friends who are in the thick of this and believe me, it's not as straightforward as you seem to think. The health insurance issue is not about denying services, it's about saying people can't stay here unless they have expensive medical insurance despite us still being in the EU at present.

But the EHIC is not intended to cover people resident in another EU country. It's for people on holiday or on business trips for example.

In any EU country, an immigrant resident would have to take out medical insurance or contribute in some way to the national healthcare service.

what were those figures?

I agree Maddy it is frustrating the way things are going. Politics in this country (and the US) is a farce at the moment. Felt good going on the march last weekend though

He's holding a constituent meeting next Weds to discuss, I got an email about it because I write to him occasionally about various issues.
Sorry to clarify Weds 1st Feb

Can you tell us what time and where?

Thank you,

Katie
