Last summer, Annie and I went on our hols to Italy. We looked at taking the train from London to Rome but the price was prohibitively expensive, something like £1000 each. In the end we flew from Heathrow for £200 each. I would much rather have taken the train, but until the prices are competitive then people will not treat it as an alternative.

Whilst on the subject - the only way to get decent prices in the UK is to book in advance. If you want to travel on the same day then you pay a hefty premium. This is a tax on spontaneity and once again discourages people from taking the train rather than jumping in the car (after all the a car journey to Manchester costs pretty much the same whatever time of the day you travel in a car).
