Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi,

We've recently created a new small pond (an old Belfast sink) & I was wondering whether anyone had some spare tadpoles we could have/catch?

Thanks,

Michael

I used to work in Sustainability for a council advising residents on these things (or in this case it would be helping them to access advice from our Nature Conservation Officer). The advice we would give is not to transfer frogs/spawn/tadpoles between ponds as it can transfer diseases etc..

If you create the right conditions they will move in on their own. It may take some time but it will happen!

Far more info on this here: http://www.froglife.org/info-advice/frogs-toads-in-my-garden/

I can definitely recommend a log pile, compost heap, bug hotel. I remember helping to clear a garden and every time we picked a piece of wood up a frog jumped out (poor frogs, the garden belonged to friends of my boyfriend at the time and I think they were planning to pave it).

I did actually see a frog a couple of days ago, so maybe we will be OK next year!

Some people have very secure fences & each block of gardens (e.g. in the Gardens) is pretty cut off - it will depend to an extent on whether someone else in the same block has a pond.

Over-secure garden fencing is a big issue for hedgehogs too...

Hedgehogs need to be able to roam far and wide in search of food, mates and nesting sites. Get together with your neighbours to cut a 13cm2 (5in2) hole in your fence or dig a channel beneath garden boundaries to connect your gardens. You can download advice about how to do this and record your hedgehog hole at hedgehogstreet.org.

Keep an eye out for neighbours doing work on their gardens, or using fencing contractors - this is the perfect opportunity to get a hedgehog hole put in and influence connectivity.

I'm sure you will - maybe even this year.

Cutting hedgehog holes sounds like a great idea if you can get together with your neighbours.

I only have a small patch of dirt by my front door (I'm on an estate).  I got home yesterday and the one allium that had bloomed so far was gone, and another that hadn't opened as of yesterday morning.  Makes me wish I had secure fences!!

Hi Michael and Sarah

So great to see Sarah's reply to your tadpole query. Transference of tadpoles is indeed a sad error. And Sarah's right - you just wait - if you create the conditions, they'll come.  Love the Belfast sink.
