Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Illegal parking outside St. Mary's Catholic Primary
The parents park illegally on double yellow lines directly opposite the school, blocking traffic and cause a very significant danger to children emerging between parked cars to go to school.
There is both free and pay and display parking within meters of the school.
The parents who park illegally are also verbally abusive, and I have witnessed one occasion where a pedestrian child was nearly hit by an illegally parked car who pulled out quickly without looking.
I have tried contacting the school and headteacher, but as far as I can see no action has been taken. If anything the situation is getting worse.
I worry that a child/ other road user will be hurt.
What can be done?

If you don't feel able to confront people direct then you shouldn't. I'm at an age where I don't really care if people think I'm a battle axe! Just work on the Head and the parking lady and see what happens.

The Headteacher has asked parents not to park illegally outside the school on many occasions by school newsletter and texts. It has been reported to Haringey Parking Department and a parking attendant is sent every day to patrol outside the school to stop the parents illegally parking. To say that no action has been taken is totally incorrect. The Headteacher has done, and continues to do, everything in her power to stop this illegal parking. Hermitage Road is a public highway and the Head has contacted the Head of Haringey Parking on numerous occasions. It would be much appreciated if others would do the same.

Interestingly I contacted the school and had the receptionist, maybe 'Pat' hang up on me when I mentioned parking.
I looked in the school newsletters online and could find no mention of parking.
The point is that whatever the school is doing at the moment (very little from what I can see) is not working.
Suggestions such as the billboard signs, and having a member of staff outside are good ones, but I have never seen the school do either of these.
The school are saying it's the council's responsibility, but it seems like the council are doing all they can. I regularly see a parking attendant, but it doesn't stop these selfish parents.
I think the school needs to take action before a child is injured or killed. I have seen one very near miss, which I reported to the school, who were very dismissive.
It also does very little for relations with the local community when the school does nothing to prevent selfish parents blocking the highway.

I lived right by the school and the amount of times the parking attendants patrol our road through the day is staggering, however they never seem to do it when the parents are dropping off theirs kids.
When my niece lived with me she wondered if the parking attendants were being paid off because sometimes half the road was parents without a parking ticket at opening and closing.
I've never bothered to check myself but i do remember her mentioning it. I presumed the council was relaxing the rules for some reason for the school.
Perhaps the nuns had a word with the big man above ?

I have wondered that, but more recently I have seen parking attendants at pick up time. They just stand there though, and the parents still park illegally, so it is completely innefectual.
It is also true that the area is normally crawling with parking attendants, who are usually very good at issuing tickets!
I'm not really sure what is happening, and why the school is so reluctant to deal with the issue.
If the parents parked in resident's parking bays/pay and displays without a ticket I couldn't give a fig, but they are parking opposite the school on double yellow lines which is frankly extremely ddangerous.

Maybe you should put in an FOI request to the Council asking for the statistics for a breakdown of the tickets they've actually issued on that road including the time of issue. Clearly the parents are flagrantly ignoring the parking attendants because ultimately they think they can. A couple of tickets actually issued might help enormously

Natasha, it is not at all clear what this means. Have you spoken to the headteacher, or haven't you? Later you say you called when the school was closed and got no answer. Surprised? You assume that someone in Reception who hung up on you may have been Pat, without evidence. If you had put as much effort into contacting the headteacher as you have into convincing us all that "this school seems to be by miles the worst offender in the area", you might have made some progress over the past month, or at least had a pleasant chat.

Are you one of the parents parking illegally?
I have been in contact with the head several times by both phone and email over the past year. I have also contacted the council and asked for my concerns to be forwarded to the governors. In addition I have contacted the neighbourhood police. You seem to be making a lot of assumptions.
The reason I said the lady who hang up on me was perhaps the Pat who commented on this thread was because she said to 'look at the forum' before hanging up.
I'm not trying to convince anyone this school is the worst offender in the area, but if anyone doubts they are perhaps they could visit the school at 3pm. It is truly horrible and a miracle a child has not, to my knowledge, been injured or killed outside the school.

I have reported this matter to Haringey Council - still awaiting a response. V dangerous for us cyclists. Pity the police station on the junction of Hermitage Road and S Ann's was flogged off...

It is very dangerous for all road users I agree, especially as a former cyclist.
Perhaps you could contact the school about this as well to highlight the issue. Their email is: admin@stmarysrcpriory.haringey.sch.uk
The council may send parking attendants, but this doesn't seem to help, so it seems to me like the solution needs to come from the school.

Further to the comments above, the school wrote to Haringey Council on the 15th April explaining all that it had done to stop illegal parking – parking wardens, texts and letters to parents – to no avail and asked if we could have cones and no-parking boards. Unfortunately, they were sent to St Mary’s N8 by mistake thus holding up further our attempts to stop the illegal parking. This came to light when we queried why we had not received them. The council apologised and re-sent them. The Site Manager has been putting the cones out morning and afternoon since last Tuesday, 26th April. The council have also now marked the kerb with yellow lines which means that anyone parking there will get an immediate fine of £65.
If anyone has any more comments or suggestions about the school and its supposed lack of care for pupils’ safety, it would be more helpful and informative to make an appointment to see the Head and the Chair of Governors, who has been fully involved in everything the Head has been doing to remedy this problem. It has also been reported to the full Governing Body at their meeting. This would be more useful than posting comments on a Forum that the school is not part of and only came to light because a member of the public informed the school of it.
