Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

As I was walking past Tesco yesterday, past the youths that congregate around there, I was once again so disappointed to see drug deals being made openly on the street. I know that this is not a new problem, but I just don't understand why it is allowed to happen there. All the time.

I'm just wondering if any of you long-time residents of the area could enlighten me on the status of policing the area and why kids can just stand on the high street and deal so openly. Boggles my mind. Thanks!

No thank you James. Your asinine and puerile contributions have been the best advert for not doing drugs I've seen in a long time. Keep up the good work.

I am not against weed but the crime it brings around Turnpike Lane is horrible.

On Thursday I saw a guy hiding a bag behind the grit box next to the tube exit so I called the police. The person answering didn't believe me and almost scold me but send a car asking me to go back and wait for them (!)

The police arrived in less than a minutes and they found two big bags of marijuana. I would estimate at least 200 gr. They thanked me for calling them.

The bad thing is that the group of guys saw me talking to the police and now I am scared every time I pass next to the tube

M, what can I say...you're my hero of the week! Thank you so much for doing the right thing. As the saying goes; "the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing". The only way to disrupt their "operations' is for it to no longer be economically viable and losing that amount of drugs will have cost them. I can appreciate that you are now a little on edge but ultimately even if they recognise you, challenging you won't get their drugs back so there's nothing in it for them to do so. Just stay aware, keep your phone to hand, and take comfort from knowing you did the right thing. Thank you again.

Can we have a HoL vigilante section ?

How is reporting a crime to the Police vigilantism?

I am talking about this when I refer to the crime around Turnpike Lane

That's exactly why there has to be community awareness and police presence.
Well done, M. It's so great to hear that there are folks in our community that say something when they see something. Illegal is illegal and it is important not to let people get away with things. You had no idea what was in those bags and THAT is why the police needed to be called.
If the systems of distribution were more civilised you wouldn't have this anarchy, prohibition is creating street dealing not the other way around.

This is a brilliant case in point, someone tests what drugs are being sold and it's marijuana of which the current system of distribution required knives hidden in bushes.

It's barbarian and caused by prohibition.
And if the Queen were a man she'd be a King. In the meantime we live in this reality which isn't going to change anytime soon.
Well, get used to a lot more street dealing and knives in bushes then.

Or place some of the anger towards changing how people understand the problem to move towards a better solution.

The old solution got us right here, it will always only get us right here.

Prohibition has failed to even make drugs inflationary. Narcotics are one of the rare things that have got cheaper over 30 years in real terms. The war on drugs is lost. We need to move on.
I genuinely don't understand how your suggestion would work in practice....say an average 25 year old wants to go to a festival for the weekend, he's going to go to his GP and say "hey Doc, I'd like the nice safe equivalent of 5 ecstasy pills, a gram of coke and an 8th for the come down....write me a prescription please.."
