Well done for helping the dog and publicising on here.

It's also a good idea to put the dog's details (and photo if you have one) on www.doglost.co.uk and www.animalsearchuk.co.uk

Let's hope the dog is microchipped as a council dog warden only keeps a dog for 7 days and if not claimed by an owner within that week, the dog may end up being put down.

That is so sad! Is there anything else I can do? Would the council let me collect him and take him to a proper dog home? Mine is a rescue, sadly I don't think I have the space for another dog, but I am familiar with lots of rescue homes nearby

You're a kind person. I guess keep in touch with the dog warden - you may even get good news that the dog was microchipped and has been collected by the owner.

If not microchipped, the dog warden has to keep the dog for 7 days to see if an owner makes contact  - after 7 days they try to find a rescue place for him or have him put to sleep. Unfortunately there are so many dogs needing homes, rescues are inundated with abandoned animals, so it's very difficult.

You can publicise him as a found dog on the websites I mentioned. Diarise when the seven days expire and give any assistance you can in publicising if a good home needed or offering help to contact rescues. (By the way, it's best not to take a found dog or cat to the RSPCA as, if not microchipped, they are at risk of being put down).

Stokey Cats and Dogs are a good local group of volunteers who help/advise in respect of lost and found cats and dogs and strays needing homes. http://stokeycatsanddogs.co.uk/ and email: stokeycatsndogs@gmail.com

You might find this previous post on here helpful found dog needs rehoming

As you will know, it's a legal requirement for all dogs to be microchipped from April.

Well done for having a rescue dog!
