Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
The Hook Greyhound Kennels, Northaw
I have looked with great interest at the old photos of Harringay Racetrack.
Has anyone got any photos they can post of The Hook Kennels, Northaw, which was the kennels which serviced Harringay Racetrack? My mum used to work there as a kennel maid May, 1949 to Christmas 1950 and still thinks foundly of it. Now in her 80's, I would love to see some photos of how the kennels used to be and also how they looked before they closed. Many thanks.

Hi All, Does anyone remember any of the staff who worked in the Admin office at the kennels? The people who did all the paperwork, post and pay packets each week?

Hi no sorry I don't remember the ladies myself but remember queuing at the window to collect pay packet before going into lunch.

I remember getting my wage pacjet from the window! Then on friday's was race night at harringay! We would kennel the dogs at the stadium then go down green lanes and spend sone on records! Happy days

Hallo. It just happens that I am visiting my brother Harry in Scotland and the name Ivor Greygoose came up in conversation. My wife googled it and here we are. Our dad Harry Witney was a trainer with the GRA from about 1940/1 until 1951. We lived at The Lodge, Cooper's Lane Road and then at 3 Hook Lane. As I remember it the Hays were at no 1, Taylor's no 2, us no 3, Ashley 4, Jonas5, the Mann's at 7. We remember many of the names mentioned in the forum.Before moving to Hackbridge Eddie Wright also lived on the ' concrete road'. He and Dad were brothers in law. I am enclosing two photos, one of Harry Witney with three greyhounds, we think are Lazy Legs, Lazy Leopard and Lazy Loiterer.The other photo is of , from the left Joe Campbell Eddie Wright and Dick Harmon. I hope they transmit ok.For the record I am now 73 and my brother Harry 87. I hope you find this of interest and welcome any feedback.

Do you remember the Pickerings we lived in the flat above the kennels by the security hut, my brother was Joe jnr. My dad mentioned your father and the other people on many occasions. Graham Michael and Denise Mann are still around the Northaw area, but sadly Kelvin passed away last year. Iris Clark is still around as are her sons John and Steven. and a few more. Hi Caroline thanks for replying. We both remember your family name and I think I knew your dad back in the day. However we left the Hook when I was10yo. A long time ago! I have looked at the Northaw site on Facebook but as I only went to Northaw school until I was about 8? not much on the site registered.I used to play cricket etc on the field in front of the houses with the Mann's and Laurence Hayes. Good to know they are still around locally. Best wishes. John

Hi John. I live at 3 Hook lane and wondered if you remember 3 cottages called Hook cottages being demolished prior to the reburshments? If you do, do you know what year it was?

I hope you are still enquiring after people who worked at Hook Lane.
I trained at the White City from 1974 to 1984 and lived in No 7 Hook Lane? which I took over from Gordon Hodson when he went to Australia. My kennels were the third one along as you entered the area and I had Frank Melville(Harringay) one side and Randolph Singleton(White City) the other. If you ignore me, in the att pic, you can see the old Northaw House where Staff lived and was taken 1975.
I moved house in 1979, but I worked there for 10 years. The Kennel Manager was Royce Skelton and the resident vet was Bruce Prole. I remember very well Messrs Pickering, Jimmy Singleton, Forster etc whose kennels were below the main buildings, but Randy Singleton and I remained great friends until his untimely death in the 80's. Hope this is of interest to you..............

Remember me, Caroline Pickering, Its great to see you on this site. If you join Facebook, there is a section on their for Northaw and one for Potters Bar and there is loads of staff on there. Bruce is still around and lives in Cornwall. Frank Melville has retired not sure where he lives, but sadly Dad and mum, Randy, and many others are no longer with us. I remember the days of Northaw and my life there.

Hi all, I have been de-cluttering and came across my 500+ greyhound racing programmes from 1973-1980 which brought back so many happy memories. I mostly went to White City but also Harringay. The Derby nights at White City were the best live atmosphere I have ever experienced. I was lucky enough to be involved in the raffle winning of a greyhound pup called 'Pacemaker' on 22/8/78 (Gala Heart Foundation Charity meeting). She then spent the next 14 months at Northaw where I became a regular Sunday visitor and loved meeting the greyhounds kennelled there (remember Deno?) and the friendly staff especially Kathy Probert. 'Lady' as she was known in the kennels wasn't good enough to race at White City or Harringay but made it at Southend where she won 6 races and was adored by her kennel hand who kept her at home after her racing career ended. Belated thanks to everyone involved from those days, special memories.

Hi - I remember Pacemaker. What a great name! I remember she came down to the hospital as a pup and was put in with a litter of 8 pups ( Dinos pups Chaingang x U Must Be Joking) They all went crazy running around the paddock and Pacemaker broke her toe! What a shame. It healed ok tho. I remember Kathy Probert too and Janet and Sue. How lucky we all were to work there!

Sorry its over year, Caroline, but I really appreciated your comments. Very private person here, so no Facebook,. I was with Randy for his last few days and we supported Peggy at the funeral in Bovey Tracey. Sadly she left us a few years later. I knew Bruce had a place near Lyndhurst in the New Forest, but that was 20 years since.
I do remember you, Caroline, but we operated at different ends of the complex!!
