Goldfish: urgent help rescuing please
Hi everyone, I have inherited four beautiful goldfish in a pond. The pond is pretty clogged up with leaves etc. Can anyone advise me about clearing it and/or changing the water please, or tell me where I can find out about this? Or even get an expert to do it for me?
Five creatures will greaatly appreciate any help ... many thanks Marian

I would suggest you start by gently removing all the leaves by hand and leaving them aside for a day or two so that insects can escape.
As with all ponds, you will need a pump to keep the water / oxygen flowing.
You may even wish to temporarily put the fish into a suitable tank/large bucket - make sure they adjust to the new water temperature (usually done by floating them for 20 mins in a bag). Do not feed them. Keep them outside with a cover on the top to prevent unwanted attention.
Don't forget to float a tennis ball in the water over the Winter period - this allows some air to get through and prevents the fish from freezing.

They have been living there for at least 4 years! I think they have had their pond cleaned out once or twice.

Hi Marian
First you need to take all the leaves and gunk out using a net.
then take out half the water and put in fresh water with some tap safe .(you can get this from any pet shop)
You will need a pump to keep the water clean and for circulation.

I have 5 tropical tanks a saltwater tank and a pond so very much a fish lover.

As I say those fish are at least 4 years old, no pump, just that frondy oxygen plant and a water lily.

Hi FPR, thank you very much for replying.
Doesn't it frighten those fish if I poke around with emptying their home? Do I just get them out with a shrimping net? They swim very fast!
Reassuring to hear that about not feeding them.

Ah that makes sense. I've been collecting rainwater in bowls. It's quite amazing how much black stuff collects in the bottom of the bowl when it's just rain.

Well, fish-well-wishers, I am so happy to tell you I've had an offer to take these fish and look after them in the ideal pond. I will post again when this comes off.

FISH ARE NOW IN THE IDEAL POND So many thanks to Lisa for taking them, we had fun getting sludgy and wet, and it all worked like a dream.
