Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Beans n Barley talk - how to make your own fermented food to aid digestion.

Did you know that fermented food can rebalance your digestion and strengthen your immune system? Me neither. Beans n Barley one of the new organic food shops in Harringay, with cafe next door, was the venue. The cappuccino was excellent and so was the talk by Paul a very knowledgeable nutritionist. The Russian lady next to me was chipping in with how her mother made the traditional sauerkraut - a fermented food example. Paul showed us how to create simple easy-recipe jars with organic carrots and ginger, topped up with brine (made from a litre of water and two tablespoons of sea salt). You weight it down with ceramic beads in a sterilized screw top jar, leave for 7 days and its ready - use small amounts everyday to restore your stomach flaura and fauna. Another batch contained cucumber and pickling herbs, another cabbage - 'massage' it first, after chopping it in a bowl, then into the jar of brine with jeera seeds. Paul is running a series of talks - go check with him for the recipe details, I may have missed ingredients out .

Is beer included in the category of a fermented food?, if so, I must be on a very healthy diet already.

Paul was great! I really liked this workshop. I am glad Beans and Barley are running these. Just need to find the baking beads now...

Brill! Thank you! Can't wait to try the carrot and ginger!

OK great, coz I tried Poundland by Homebase today and they didn't have any.
