"Locals in the Green Lanes area say Mr Aksakal had “enemies.” One shopkeeper, who asked not to be named, said: “He was well-known around here. He was caught up in things that get you into trouble and that’s got to be what’s happened here.”

The area is known for feuding between rival Turkish and Kurdish gangs over the control of the heroin trade."

Sensational journalism from the Evening Standard. You'd actually have to have lived here for 15 years to know that this was complete rubbish.

This morning I noticed an Ikea bag stuffed behind the bins in my front garden. Does anybody have the number for the SNT?
There was a lady of the night plying trade on Pemberton bridge last night, wearing little more than a burgundy dressing gown.

Sounds like ES piffle to me, or a shot a giving texture to a story by raking up pre-2001 history, when there was an issue of the sort the Standard cites.

For the last 10 years, Harringay has been neutral territory where the Turkish Bombacilar gang from Stoke Newington and the Tottenham Boys very occasionally pass through in their Black German automotive cavalcades without fear of stepping into "enemy territory".

All the recent gang violence has been in Tottenham/Wood Green and Stoke Newington, not Harringay.

This is lazy journalism at best.

I dont know, I think there might be something in it, That murder was big news round here in 1998, happened around where Denzi the off licence that just closed down was,The police came round to all of us, wanting our alibies

We new it was gang and drug war but non of he locals would talk, but supposedly big mafia payments having to be paid out by local businesses to keep people happy- in the end police moved in permanently around where the ladder was - stayed about 3-6m before they got to the root and charged this guy- Seem bit too coincidentally now he is free that he got murdered. He certainly isnt the first or the last turk/kurd to be killed over such disputes

I remember the lovely guy who worked in my local newsagent was stabbed to death in 1999- that was mistaken identity though

Whoops, probably more info than I should have
