Speed Cameras - Wightman Road?
Has anyone ever petitioned for speed cameras on Wightman Road? Only a couple of months ago outside our house we woke up to the pavement ripped up and four posts knocked down.
Today a car crashed into our parked car on Wightman Road. Their car flipped and caught fire and ours is a write off. Luckily no one was injured as i dread to think what might have happened if anybody had been on the pavement or us getting in or out of our car.
Just wondered if this has been brought up before as i've seen many a car driving too fast down this long road.

They had mobile ones occasionally a few years back. It might (MIGHT) be worth asking one of the current crop of councillors.

That was the car that caused it though, not mine. Mine was just parked and got smashed into a tree.

I live in a quiet road, about five years ago my car was catapulted onto the pavement outside my house, although the budget was restricted, I managed to get SLOW signs painted in the road. I would suggest getting a list of all accidents in Wightman Road in the last two years (including the one a few weeks ago and any subsequent hospitalisations) as evidence of the need for traffic calming measures, you might get a road signs with a flashing LED ring and 30 in the middle.

A few months after the SID ( flashing speed indicator ) was put in place I did a video record of the number of times it was triggered. Approximately 50% of the vehicles passing it triggered it, showing that they were exceeding the limit.
Scofflaws don't take any notice of signs.

Thanks for that. Bit annoying it makes out both cars collided when mine was stationary and parked and the guy that caused it was uninsured and didn't even own the other car. I was stood at the scene talking to police they would have only had to ask me what happened.
I'm glad I was in to look out of the window and see emergency services and an overturned car as the police gave me more than enough information to give to the insurance company. Would have been horrible to come home and seen my car smashed up and no explanation.

Sarah, sorry to hear about the accident on Wightman and your car. When residents and I campaigned for the 20mph limit (when I was ward councillor) I really pushed for cameras for effective enforcement. Martin is right, I was told at the time that cameras would only be considered if there were a certain amount of accidents in a certain time period, I can't remember the exact details.
I also live on Wightman and it is blighted by speeding cars and HGVs despite a camera to catch HGVs illegally using it. I asked the council a week or so about numbers of captures and prosecutions of lorries and the number of HGVs using it does seem to have reduced over the last year (though for residents it often doesn't seem so). Pinch points have been suggested which would limit the HGVs and also slow traffic.
It does seem ridiculous that there have to be numerous accidents or even fatalities for the council to take action.
The current local councillors need to continue to press for a resolution.
