Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
STOLEN BIKE - Pinnacle Lithium 3 2013 - PLEASE READ
Hello guys,
My name is Darren and I am asking you to keep an eye out for my stolen bike.
Unfortunately, the police have no more lines of enquiry and have closed my crime report under outcome code 18. This means it is up to me to create new lines of enquiry, without tipping off the thief. This is one such way.
The bike in question is a blue men's hybrid bike.

The attached poster has more details. Please feel free to print it off, but do not distribute this poster. The thief may see it and dispose of my bike before the police can get to it.
I suspect the thief still has the bike or has sold it to someone within Harringay.
If the bike is safe enough to retrieve then please do so and call the police on 101, so they can take it from you.
If you are unable to do this, please leave the location of the bike, call the police on 101 and use my crime reference number to inform them of its location.
If you wish to report information to the police anonymously then replace 101 with 0800 555 111, which is the crimestoppers number.
The bike was stolen on Thursday 2nd July 2015 between 0200 and 0300 hours.
It was stolen from Effingham Road, London, N8 0AB.
A witness has said the thief is Eastern European and was wearing a black & red striped Nike t-shirt.
There is a potential reward of £100 if my bike is safely returned to the police intact.
All assistance is appreciated. I hope this goes a long way to deterring bike theft.

Norah, their exact words are "we have closed your crime report under outcome code 18", which means they are not actively looking for it.
The police will only find my bike if it comes up during the investigation of a different crime. As I don't know the exact circumstances under which it was stolen, I cannot guarantee this will occur.
It is possible that the thief still has my bike and is riding around on it as we speak. If this is the case, the police cannot do anything about it, because it isn't part of an active crime.
However, the community can do something about it, they can report it to the police. The police then must act on this new information and it could lead to my bike being returned to me.
I appreciate the unusual nature of what I'm doing, but I'm thinking of every plausible scenario for my bike to be in and then setting up a trap for the thief in that scenario.

Our bikes were stolen 2 summers ago, we had just returned from a holiday in france,took the bikes from the car rack, locked up our bikes outside for the night, we were going to put them on the racks in the house the following morning. They were stolen in the dead of night. I still feel the pain and scan for our bikes ( four of them) every time I go out.

I feel your pain having my bike nicked and the police doing "nothing"
And telling me that I had a 1% chance of getting. It back even though it was Bike registered by the police! I will keep
My eyes peeled for you. Some people do actually retrieve them...I hope you are fortunate enough to to retrieve yours. It is truly frustrating as well!!

The percentage is probably less than that. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack. I'm not sure what the police can do apart from check the registration numbers and photos if they find a haul. It's not like they can drive around looking for them. As I said before, the police did help us to retrieve one of our bikes which we tracked down ourselves on wwwbikeshd.co.uk. So upsetting and frustrating nonetheless.

I totally agree Norah however, when they tell you to get your bike registered as it is more likely to be found if stolen is not actually the case then i am assuming that the bike register thing is a bit of a tokenistic fad!!

Bike theft really a terrible problem, it's so upsetting to be a victim of it. I really wish more could be done about it. From what I understand, the bikes are stolen by young kids and then passed on higher up the chain to be sold. Its a big business.

There is more that can be done about theft in general. There's a very old fashioned, simple idea that seems to have been forgotten - community cohesion.
If the community is so closely connected, it acts as an invisible trap for any would be thief and creates an excellent deterrent towards crime.
Community cohesion is part of the reason I believe Harringay Online exists. However, unless it is enforced in the real world, it doesn't have the same effect.

Community cohesion is not going to catch a bike thief at 3 in the morning and with all the good will in the world it's not likely that your bike will be spotted by a member of HOL. Realistically it'll be out of the borough by now being photographed to be put on Gum Tree. Cctv might help though.
